Myrta Josefa Suárez, 78, of Matawan, passed away Saturday, July 10th, 2021. She was born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico on March 28, 1943, to Carmen Rivera Adorno and Epifanio Suarez Sein. Myrta came to the Brooklyn NY in the late 60’s to be of service to her sister’s family. During that time, she met and married Carlos A. Rodriguez. Together they had two children, Charlene, and Omar. While residing in Greenpoint, Brooklyn Myrta was a head bank teller at Chase Manhattan Bank and spent her spare time to learning how to knit and crochet.
In 1983 Myrta picked up her children with moved back to Puerto Rico with no support after her marriage failed. She worked hard at Kmart Corporation as a single mother to support her family and resided there until 1998 when she was called back to New York to help her daughter with a difficult pregnancy. In 2001, she moved to Matawan to be closer to her daughter’s family, who meant the world to her. She left her career to help raise her grandsons so that her daughter and son-in-law could continue with theirs. Myrta was a devoted soccer grandma and her grandsons' biggest fan, she delighted in being a regular at all their sports and activities.
Myrta was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and was a survivor and cancer free since 2007. During her therapy at Riverview Medical Center, a talented knitter, she knitted hats for her fellow cancer patients. She also and made numerous baby blankets, hats and booties for friends and family.
Myrta enjoyed travelling with her family, whether it was trips back home to Puerto Rico, Cleveland OH to visit her sister or road trips to Delaware or even a visit to Canada. In later years she enjoyed spending days at the Matawan Adult Day Center. In her quiet time, Myrta could be found knitting, embroidery, doing crossword puzzles, word search and listening to Christian music.
Myrta was an active member and past treasurer at the Perth Amboy United Simpson Methodist Church before joining the Matawan United Methodist Church. Myrta will always be fondly remembered as a giving, selfless and loving woman who was devoted to her family and of course to God.
Myrta is survived by her two children; her daughter Charlene, wife of Richard Roberts, Sr., of Cliffwood Beach; and her son, Omar Rodriguez, of Bronx, New York. Myrta also leaves behind her sister, Naida Suarez Anderson, of Ohio; two grandsons; Brandon Castro and Richard Roberts, Jr. along with nephews; Rigoberto Pabon, Ricardo Pabon, Modesto Pabon, Ruben Anderson, and Jonathan Anderson; goddaughter Yitzzajoan Acevedo of Massachusetts; grandnephews Ocean and Yasir Anderson and grandniece Katherine Anderson.
She was predeceased by her parents Carmen Rivera Adorno and Epifanio Suarez Sein and her siblings' Gladys Torres, Epifanio Suarez and Alberto Suarez.
A Commemorative Service will take place during the 9:45 am Sunday Worship on July 18th at Matawan United Methodist Church, 478 Atlantic Avenue, Aberdeen, NJ 07747.
