Thomas Theophilus Jenkins Obituary

Thomas “TJ” “Tommy” Theophilus Jenkins, 69, of LaVale, MD, passed away on July 8, 2021, at UPMC Western MD Hospital. He was born on January 15, 1952, and was raised in East Orange, NJ. He attended Montclair State College and the Maryland Institute College of Art. He furthered his education with a Master’s in Education at Towson University. He worked in the mental health and addictions fields before becoming a high school art teacher at City College High School in Baltimore, from which he retired. TJ was a member of the Allegany Arts Council and the Baltimore Blues Society and on the Board of Fort Recovery. TJ is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Lester and Gloria Beatty Jenkins, as well as his brother, Tyler James Jenkins. He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Roberson Jenkins, and her family. He is survived by his sister Rebecca (Lee) Douglas of Newark, NJ; brother Kim (Sandy) Jenkins of North Port, FL; sister Brenda Barnes of East Orange, NJ/New Bedford, MA; sister Barbara (Sam) Johnson of Pageland, SC; and his aunt, Alberta Gregory of Newark, NJ. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends. TJ was an artist and an avid gardener. He was a blues singer who sang and played harmonica in several bands over the years, most notably, The Channel Cats. TJ was an active member of the recovery community in the Cumberland area. TJ will be remembered as a devoted husband, brother, and friend. He was creative and innovative, always eager to learn. He shared his knowledge and skills generously with the spirit of improving the lives of others. He will be sadly missed by many. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2021 from 2-4 p.m. at 9 North Centre Meeting Room on the 2nd floor above the Allegany Arts Council Saville Gallery, 9 North Centre Street, Cumberland, MD 21502. Elevator access available in the rear of the building. Stair entrance through the Art Gallery lobby to the left.
