Joe Allen Turner Obituary

Mr. Joe Allen Turner, resident of Wetumpka, Alabama, passed away peacefully Thursday morning, July 8, 2021. Joe Allen was born at home in Wetumpka, Alabama, on September 18, 1931. He graduated from Wetumpka High School and went on to attend the University of Alabama. He served as the Chaplain’s Assistant at Fort Carson, the United States Army post near Colorado Springs, Colorado. He spent his career as a civil servant managing government documents at the Air University Library, at Maxwell Air Force Base, in Montgomery, Alabama, until his retirement. Joe Allen was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Wetumpka and served as the organist for 63 years. He was a founding member of the Elmore County Historical Society and co-authored a book, “Wetumpka,” with Jan Wood, part of the Images of America series. Joe Allen enjoyed spending time painting throughout his life, creating many beautiful paintings and sketches. He shared his love and knowledge of history with many, assisting people in Alabama and across the country with their genealogical research. He enjoyed contributing his time, knowledge, and resources to the Elmore County Museum. He could be seen walking the Wetumpka sidewalks or local cemeteries narrating facts on historical tours. His fascinating and entertaining stories and quick wit will be missed. The family will receive friends Sunday, July 11, 2021, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Gassett Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 12, 2021, at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church of Wetumpka, with Rev. Jim Sexton officiating. Burial will be at Wetumpka City Cemetery with Gassett Funeral Home directing. Joe Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Clifton E. and Voncile Haynie Turner. He is survived by his brother, Samuel Clifton Turner; nieces Beverly Turner Mack (Dean) and Leigh Turner Vines (Michael) of Brentwood, Tennessee; great nieces Ashley Kristen Mack and Katie Leann Mack; and great nephews Samuel Thomas Vines and Mitchell Pierce Vines of Brentwood, Tennessee. Pallbearers will be James Skinner, Joe Brown, Ed Reeves, Jerry Roper, Wayne Turner and Jim Locke of Ripley, Mississippi. Honorary pallbearers will be Pat Turner, Rick Beauchamp, Jimmy Adams and Mike Croyle. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Elmore County Historical Society (ECHS), P.O. Box 211, Wetumpka, AL 36092.
