Mark Gilbert Scherer PINE RIDGE, South Dakota Obituary

Mark Gilbert Scherer

Peacefully and immersed in the love of family and friends, Gilbert Gene Little Spotted Horse, Jr., fully entered God’s presence at age 47, on Tuesday, July 6, 2021. Born on May 7, 1974, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, Gilbert was the beloved son of two families. Gilbert graduated from Lincoln Southeast High School in 1993 and attended Peru State College and Haskell Indian Nations University. He lived his faith through his generous hospitality and steadfast friendship to many. He expressed his giftedness for youth ministry in many contexts – in his congregation, as a camp counselor, soccer coach, and on the road with drum corps. Over the years, he carried his same youthful enthusiasm and warm outreach into all of his communities – where he worked, received dialysis and lived. At Hillcrest Firethorn, he was quick to share a smile and a laugh and rallied his neighbors to activities. Gilbert is survived by his mother, Bonnie Scherer; siblings, Angelia Cross, Angelita Cross, Bernard Little Spotted Horse, Jeff (Kate) Scherer, Julian Cross, Julianna Izazaga, Michael “Kevin” Cross, Morning Song Little Spotted Horse, Nona Morales, Shanlee “Linda” Cross, Shelley (Steve Ross) Scherer, and William “Billie” Sanchez. He was the crazy, loving uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, Fern Cross, Gilbert Little Spotted Horse, and adoptive father, Tom Scherer. Pallbearers will be Avel Izazaga, Adrian Cross, Brandon Little Spotted Horse, Alonzo Little Spotted Horse, Alex Lara, Marcy Lara, and Jose Lara. Honorary pallbearers will be All Friends & Relatives. Graveside Services: 1:00 PM, Saturday, July 17, 2021 at the St. Paul’s Catholic Cemetery in Porcupine, SD. Traditional Lakota Services: Mr. James Cross Arrangements entrusted with Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD
