John A. Smith

<p>Age 83, of Leoni Township, passed away Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at Lynwood Manor in Adrian.&nbsp; John was born in Jackson, Michigan on May 1, 1938, one of nine children of Leroy and Sophie (Samulak) Smith.&nbsp;</p> <p>He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy in 2003; son-in-law, Dan Poole; granddaughter, Rachel Poole; parents, Leroy and Sophie; sisters, Sophie Reitnauer and Catherine &ldquo;Katie&rdquo; St. Martin; and brothers, Albert and Frankie Smith.</p> <p>John is survived by his beloved children, Tina Poole, Leroy Smith, Rosie Ransom and Patty Ferris; five grandchildren, D.J. Poole, Jaimie (Cory) Hines, R.J. Petrimoulx, Michael (Megan) Ferris and Matthew (Jessica) Ferris; eleven great-grandchildren; four siblings, Barbara (Jas) Soltis, Hattie (Jim) Murphy, Tony Smith and Darlene Sprague; many nieces and nephews.</p> <p>Starting in the roofing business at 17 years old, John worked with McDonald Roofing for over 30 years, retiring in 1986; he then went on to work with his daughter and son-in-law at Dan&rsquo;s Roofing until finally retiring at age 80.&nbsp; In his younger years, he and Nancy often traveled to Northern Michigan where they enjoyed morel mushroom hunting. Fans of old country music, trips to Nashville, Tennessee and Buck Lake Ranch in Indiana for concerts were not uncommon.&nbsp; John enjoyed watching family and friends participate in stock car racing at many of the local tracks like Jackson, Spartan and Butler Motor Speedways.&nbsp; He fished a lot with his buddy Billy Jewel and enjoyed hunting, fishing and bingo.&nbsp; John enjoyed hanging out with his brother Frankie and grandson D.J.&nbsp; He truly enjoyed his work, hobbies and more especially, time spent with his family.</p> <p>As was his request, cremation has taken place and no public services will be held.&nbsp; For those who wish, contributions in John&rsquo;s memory may be directed to his family. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
