TED ALLISON NASH, OLYMPIC ROWER Ted Allison Nash died at his home in the arms of his beloved wife, Jan on July 3, 2021. Ted was born in Melrose, Mass. on October 29, 1932, to Allison Glasgow Solt and Theodore W. Nash. He grew up in New England and Carmel, CA. Ted was a man who loved life and pursued it fully. Ted served in the military as a first lieutenant in the Army Aviation division where he taught aviation and aerobatics. He attended Boston University and the University of Washington where he received his bachelor's degree while training and competing out of Lake Washington Rowing Club for the Olympics. Ted won the Gold medal in rowing in the four without coxswain in the 1960 Olympics. After winning the Bronze medal in the same event in Tokyo in the 1964 Olympics, Ted took a position as freshman rowing coach at the University of Pennsylvania. He later became head coach of men’s heavyweight rowing. Ted was a highly successful crew coach at Penn winning numerous intercollegiate races and placing athletes on Pan American and Olympic teams. In 2014 the University of Pennsylvania’s honored him for his success with the dedication of the Ted A. Nash Land Rowing Center. After Ted left Penn he worked in business, but his passion for rowing never waned. He donated his time and expertise coaching at Penn A.C. and was an ever-present figure on the Schuylkill River always ready with a compliment, advice, or a helping hand. He loved creating opportunities for those who shared his passion for rowing. Always physically fit and ready for a challenge Ted competed in both elite and master’s rowing events from the 1950's to 2018. Besides his two Olympic medals, he was a coach in nine other Olympics. Over his rowing career as an elite athlete or coach, he produced 48 medals in Olympic, World, and Pan American events with 76 crews. He received many, many awards including the Medal of Honor from US Rowing and induction into the Helms, National Rowing Foundation, University of Washington, and Boston University Hall of Fame. Ted was also proud to be a co-founder of the National Women’s Rowing Association. Ted met his wife Jan on boathouse row in 1985. They were together ever since and have resided in Medford, NJ for over 30 years. Besides Jan, he is survived by his two sons, Aaron Nash and Ted Nash, step-son David Coogan, three granddaughters- Audrey Nash, Aislinn Nash, Sophia Nash, sister Paulette Solt, brother Peter Solt, niece Stacie Solt, and the Ridgeway family in-laws. Ted loved people and enhanced the lives of so many who were privileged to have known him. Known for his kind and generous nature Ted was loved and respected by all. His smile and the joy he brought to everyone’s life will be greatly missed. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St Mary of the Lakes Church on Thursday, July 22, 2021. A celebration of Ted’s life will be held at a future date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ted's name may be made to: Penn AC Rowing Association or the University of Pennsylvania Boathouse Restoration.
