Genevieve A. "Jean" Dow Obituary

Mrs. Genevieve A. “Jean” (Pokorniecki) Dow, 91, formerly of Eley Street, Kingston, passed peacefully into Eternal Life late Tuesday night in the comfort of her residence at the Temple Apartments, Edwardsville is, with her family at her bedside.

Born October 16, 1929 in Kingston, she was the last surviving of three children to the late Joseph and Henrietta (Mazur) Pokorniecki.  Educated in the Wilkes-Barre schools, she attended the former Marymount High School, Heights section of the city.

Previously in her youth, she was employed by the A. Rifkin Company of Hanover Township for several years as an embroiderer.  Known for her hand-pressed table cloths, she previously cared for the altar linens at Saint Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, Kingston; was a presser at Master Garment Cleaners and pressed for her own private clientele.

Jean was a long time resident of Eley Street in Kingston, moving to senior living in 2019.  She loved her time on Eley Street and often recalled the family home and her pet cat, Pailey fondly.  While in Kingston, she was a longtime and faithful member of the former Saint Hedwig Parish.

Following her marriage to the late Mr. Clarence E. Dow, on March 15, 1950, the couple relocated to northern California where they would reside for several years before returning to the Wyoming Valley.

Known as a consummate homemaker especially in her later years, Jean's love of her Polish heritage was evident by the manner she instilled the family traditions in her children; especially during the Christmas and Easter holy days, a trait they keep to this day.

She and her husband not only raised their six children, but also their granddaughter, Teresa Dow Langshaw of Livermore, California.

Above all else, Jean is remembered as being a loving, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to her adoring family.  Her presence will be greatly missed by all those she touched in this life.

Besides her beloved husband Clarence who passed in 1989, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Janick; her brother, Mr. John Pokorny and by a son, Mr. Daryl Dow.

Left to cherish the wonderful memories they have of their mother are her children, Clarence Hugh Dow and his wife Ethel of Kingston; Charlene Giza and her husband Lawrence of Bear Creek; Corene Dow of Wilkes-Barre; Ronald Dow and his wife Joan of West Bend, Wisconsin; Gayle Sekel and her husband Daniel of Harding; Daughter-in-law, Carol Dow, of Hunlock Creek; Seventeen grandchildren including Teresa Langshaw, Deanna Dow, Hugh Dow, Victoria Kraynack, April Mullin, Nicole Macosky, Timothy Dow, Amanda Wagner, Joshua Dow, Katelyn Dow, Maggie Dow, Elizabeth Giza, George Giza, Tara Harrison, Johnathan Novak, Danielle Sekel and Olivia Sekel.  Seventeen great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Jean's family would like to gratefully acknowledge the care and compassion shown her by Dr. David Greenwald and her special caregivers; Angie, Karen, Taryn, Paige, Shanice, Katelyn and Krystal, especially in her final days.

Funeral services for Mrs. Dow will be conducted Friday, July 2 with her Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Saints Peter and Paul Parish, 13 Hudson Road, Plains Township.  The Reverend John C. Lambert, pastor, will serve as celebrant and homilist.

Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow next to her husband in Denison Cemetery, Swoyersville.

Relatives and friends may join Mrs. Dow's family for visitation and shared remembrances Friday morning directly at church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of her Funeral Mass.

Jean's family would be humbled if those wishing to make a monetary donation in their mother's memory, kindly give consideration to Ss. Peter & Paul Parish Food Bank or Scholarship Fund at 13 Hudson Road, Plains Township, PA 18705.

The John V. Morris Family Funeral Home Inc., 625 North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre is honored to care for Mrs. Dow and her family at this time.
