Randy Arlen Fisher Obituary

The family writes --

Randy A. Fisher, 69, of Union, NJ, passed away peacefully at the Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains on June 29, 2021. He had been ill since suffering sudden cardiac arrest in November 2020.

Randy was born on August 13, 1951 in Newark, NJ. He lived on Renner Avenue and attended the Maple Avenue School until his family moved to Maplewood. Randy was a member of the Columbia High School Class of 1969 and the Rutgers University Class of 1973. For many years, he worked in financial services at Prudential in Newark. It was there that he met his wife Diane, wooing her with his imitation of a stick of chewing gum. They danced to Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” at a co-worker’s party and remained together ever since. The couple wed on August 6, 1983 and completed their family with the births of daughter Corinne Elizabeth (1985) and son Christopher Lee (1990).

In July 1989, Randy, with Diane’s support, opened a sports card shop, Perfectly Centered in Roselle Park. He built a loyal customer base and operated the store until he fell ill. The Fisher family business will continue, as Corinne is reopening Perfectly Centered this summer in Larchmont, NY.

Randy was a gentle, generous soul who enjoyed bowling, basketball, horse racing, poker, and golf and was an avid fan of baseball great Rocky Colavito and the New York Knicks. He also loved movies (Danny Kaye, Hammer Films, Ray Harryhausen, Vincent Price, and Christopher Lee) and music (Ricky Nelson, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Tanya Tucker, Crystal Gayle, and Cyndi Lauper).

Corinne will miss getting in the car for Dad’s signature “Mystery Trips”, sitting as close to the stage as possible at Cyndi Lauper concerts, meeting their favorite celebrities at the Chiller Theatre conventions, asking how to get to the Beyond section in Bed, Bath & Beyond, the time he gave a half-eaten hot dog to an overly enthusiastic actor at the Renaissance Faire (and she ate it), and hearing how he only got one answer wrong on the math portion of the SAT (but it was an error on their end). She will be eternally indebted to him for the infamous day he rescued her from the mini golf hole after her foot got stuck.

Chris will miss dissecting every aspect of sports games on TV (including the ridiculous commentary from the broadcasters), competing over internet word games or Sporcle lists, sharing tales of past debauchery during holidays with the family, and definitely the “Mystery Trips” - so legendary they deserve a shoutout from each of the kids. He will look back fondly on weekend mornings spent with Dad learning to play basketball in the parking lot of St. Michael’s Church and will always remember Dad’s excited cheers of support coming from the stands of his youth games, especially the particularly loud scream after the “one-knee shot”.

Randy was predeceased by his parents Samuel and Harriette Fisher. In addition to his devoted wife and cherished children, he is survived by his beloved brother Gary (Ileen), many nieces, nephews, and in-laws, and a host of friends. The family also wishes to acknowledge all the nurses, nursing assistants, aides, and therapists who treated Randy with humor, patience, and compassion throughout the difficult months of his illness. We are forever grateful for your comfort and care.

Funeral services will be private. The family will hold a public memorial service to celebrate Randy’s life at a later date. Tribute donations may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Please visit obits.nj.com for online condolences.

Randy is now on the ultimate Mystery Trip to a better place where the diner will never run out of strawberry shortcake, baseball card deliveries will always come on time, and he knows the answer to every Final Jeopardy question. May his memory be a blessing.
