Richard Eugene Chester Obituary

Richard Chester of La Crosse passed away on June 28th, 2021, at the age of 73 of Alzheimer’s disease at Lakeview Healthcare facility in West Salem, Wisconsin. Richard was born on April 6, 1948, to William and Stella (Sanford) Chester. Following high school graduation, Richard enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and served his county in Vietnam at a Jet Aircraft mechanic. Richard enjoyed camping and spending time with family and friends around the campfire at Goose Island campground, just south of La Crosse. He loved listening to music and dancing and going to the races at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. Richard worked for Chart energy and chemicals for 31 years as an internal repair welder. He enjoyed traveling the world as part of his job. In his free time, he loved going for rides in his Camaro and entering the car shows at Dairy Queen. Richard enjoyed spending time with his family no matter what they were doing, although sometimes he would sneak away to play donkey-kong on his Nintendo 64. Richard is survived his wife and friend Darla Chester of 48 years; his children, Brian (Sarah) Hanson, Marc (Diane) Chester, Kimberly (Dean) Baker, and Kristen (Brian Blank) Chester; his sisters, Sandy Chester, Bonda (Raymond) Papenfuss, Virginia (Dan) Rhodenhiser, Mary Louise Stetzer, and Brenda Flom; 13 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, William and Stella (Sanford) Chester and a few grandchildren and nieces. Richard’s family would like to say a special thank you to the staff at Lakeview Health care facility, Mayo Clinic hospice staff, Mayo Clinic doctors and appreciation to anyone who helped give Richard the exceptional care he received. He will be sadly missed by his family and his friends that got the chance to know him. There will be a graveside memorial service at Hamilton Cemetery (850 Franklin Street, West Salem, Wisconsin) at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 3, 2021, with Pastor Park Hunter from Onalaska United Methodist officiating. Military Honors will be provided by both the United States Air Force and West Salem American Legion Post #51. Dickinson Family Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
