Judy Major, 65, of St. Helena Island passed away Thursday, June 25, 2021, at Select Specialty Hospital in Savannah, Georgia. Arrangements are entrusted to Allen Funeral Home of Beaufort. We welcome you to provide your thoughts and memories on our tribute.

The funeral services will be held at the family's home 34 Neighbor Lane St Helena Island, SC, @ 12  Noon. She will be carried to her final resting place Beaufort National Cemetery by horse-drawn carriage.

She graduated in 1973 with her diploma from Saint
Helena High School. Judy began working at the young
age of 15 and began a career in nursing. In the years to
follow, she shifted into a career of Hotel Management &
Administration. Judy later transitioned into a career as a
Transportation and Transit Coordinator with the Beaufort
County School District until she medically retired.
On January 6, 1972, she was united in marriage to
the love of her life, Benjamin Major Sr.
Judy was preceded in death by two brothers,
George Brown and Arthur Cuthbert, one sister, Deanna
Brown and one son, O’Kuri Williams.
Judy became a member of New Hope Grand Lodge and Ruth Chapter #10 OES in 1994
which later became the Elizabeth Grand Chapter in Columbia, SC. She was the past District
Deputy for the State of South Carolina, Ruth Chapter and was the past Matron. Judy held the
positions of Worthy Matron for the Ladies Nights, Worthy Matron for Daughters of Sphinx,
Secretary of Herions for the Grand Lodge and the title of Most Worthy Grand Matron for the
Elizabeth Grand Chapter.
At an early age, Judy gave her life to Christ. She was a devoted member of Adam Street
Baptist Church. As a member, she was active in the Young Adult & Senior Choirs as well as the
Kitchen Ministry. She served as a Pastor’s Aid and was the founder of “Sisters in Red” which was
an organization that focused on the unification of women of color for all ages.
Judy was a beautiful spirit and wore many hats in her daily walk of life. She was a caregiver
to many and often opened her home to others with her infamous welcoming smile. She was an
exceptional cook and was relied on to contribute dishes at family functions, social gatherings etc.
Although mild in temperament, she was a take-charge person. Judy would usually be
called upon to head up an event and did so effortlessly. She was wise beyond her years. She
counseled many with her words of wisdom & remained a true confidante. Judy’s love for her
family was genuine and unprecedented. Family was everything to her. She loved to travel and was
always ready for a trip especially when it came to her children. She adored Pokeno and would
often initiate a game with family members and friends at a moment’s notice. Judy loved to shop &
be fashionable and was well known for her snazzy ensembles as well as her timeless fragrances.
On June 24, 2021, at Select Specialty Hospital in Savannah, GA, Judy quietly slipped
away into eternal rest. Those left to cherish her memories are her loving husband of 49 years,
Benjamin Major Sr. of Saint Helena Island, three sons, Christopher Brown, Benjamin Major Jr.
and David (Lisha) Singleton, all of Saint Helena Island, SC, five daughters, Turkessa(Curtis) Epps
of Saint Helena Island, SC, Pamela (Darryl) Centeno of Poughkeepsie, NY, Geraldine (George)
Robinson of Saint Helena Island, SC, Michelle Simmons of Beaufort, SC, and Kimberly Sharp of
Bluffton, SC; One sister, Tracy Bordeaux of Saint Helena Island; Four brothers: Arthur J. (Mary)
Brown of Saint Helena Island, Gerald Brown, Derald (Mowetta) Brown of Dayton, Ohio and
Gerrod Brown of Summerville, SC; One sister-in-Law, Victoria M. Hernton; Five brothers-inlaw:
John T. (Betty) Major Jr. of Walterboro, SC, Robert (Rosa) Major Sr., Ezekial (Sara) Major
and Heaton Major all of Saint Helena Island, SC, and Doug (Denise) Kearse of Savannah, GA;
One loving aunt, Albertha (Charles) Jefferson; One special niece, Cynthia Major; Two special
cousins, Emma Byas and Louise Aiken; Three God-daughters: Kedron, Dana, and Tanisha;
Two special friends that became sisters, Lavern Smalls and Thelma Taylor; Three special
daughters: Ava Major, Stacy Major and La Shawn Jefferson; seventeen grandchildren, six greatgrandchildren,
a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
