Dalton Lee Oak Obituary

Dalton Lee Oak, age 83, of LaGrange, Kentucky, passed away on Sunday, June 20, 2021 at his residence. He was born December 9, 1937 in Carroll County, Kentucky, the son of Elmer and Marie (Stethen) Oak. Mr. Oak was a graduate of Trimble County High School, and received a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown College, where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, and a master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University. He held a Rank 1 in education and principal certification. He also served in the Kentucky Army National Guard. Mr. Oak began his teaching career in 1958 by teaching Math at Trimble County High School for one year; served fourteen years at Carroll County High School; principal at Eminence Independent Jr. and Sr. High School for five years; and was the first principal at Goshen Elementary School where he served for seventeen years. While at Goshen Elementary, the school was nationally recognized as a School of Excellence and many awards were given to the school and him. After retirement, he served as interim principal for various other schools in the county, as well as as safety director and transportation director for Oldham County Schools. Following his retirement, he became a farmer and enjoyed antiquing and attending auctions. In addition to his being an educator, Dalton was a believer in athletics. He was a life-long fan of the Cincinnati Reds, often telling stories of trips to Crosley Field, Riverfront Stadium and Great American Ballpark. For most of his life, he played or coached a variety of sports. He served as the head coach in both baseball and basketball at different times during his career, as well as numerous seasons as a high school assistant, YMCA and Little league coach. Some of his favorite times were coaching his children and grandchildren at North Oldham Little League. Oldham County High School baseball held a special place in his heart as he served as an assistant for several years. His son Doug and grandsons Hunter and Deaton all played in the program. Survivors include his wife, the former Deah Welty, to whom he was married on August 29, 1958 at Bedford Baptist Church; one son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Dana Oak of LaGrange; two daughters: Dawn Oak of LaGrange, and Devin Oak and her husband Jason Hocker of Louisville, Kentucky; one brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Cecilia Oak of Bedford; and five grandchildren: Nathan Bertram, William W. Sears, Hunter Sears, Dreeanna Oak and Deaton Oak. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, December Lynn Bertram on August 21, 2017; and one sister, Joan Schnabel The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Dalton Oak Oldham County Baseball Scholarship, C/O Bedford Bank, 45 Highway 42 East, Bedford, Kentucky 40006.
