Dr. David Ryan Cook, age 79, of Cranberry Twp died on Sunday June 20, 2021. David Ryan Cook was born November 15, 1941 to Winifred Eileen (Gray) Cook and Albert Beam Cook, Somerset County. He is survived by his loving wife, former Sandra Sivulich, Cranberry Twp; two children, Sandra Ann Cook Kerns, married to Jonathan Richard Kerns, Butler and David Craig Cook, Ladera Ranch, CA; three grandchildren, Noah George Cook, Huxley Herbert Cook and Wells Rigby Cook; and one brother Ronald Lee Cook, married to the former Deborah Wood, Central City. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Dr. Wayne Bruce Cook. Ryan attended the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown for his undergraduate studies and earned his Medical Degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1966. He completed his Internship at St. Francis General Hospital, Pittsburgh and his Anesthesiology Residency at the University of Pittsburgh Health Center from 1967-1969. He completed his Anesthesiology Fellowship at the Yale New Haven Hospital from 1969- 1970. Ryan spent two years at Wilford Hall USAF Hospital at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX to fulfill his commitment to the US Air Force as part of the Berry Plan. Much of Ryan’s career was spent in Pittsburgh as a Professor of Anesthesiology and Pharmacology at the University of Pittsburgh and as the Chief of Anesthesia at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh from 1977-1999. Ryan also found time to obtain his MBA from the University of Pittsburgh, Joseph M. Katz School of Business in 1989. He spent four years late in his career as a Professor of Anesthesiology at Duke University Medical Center. Ryan authored several hundred professional papers and book chapters, edited two anesthesiology textbooks, was the associate editor of a major anesthesiology journal for nine years and was an invited lecturer at local, regional, national, and international venues. In 2009, Ryan was recognized for his contributions to the field of pediatric anesthesiology with the Robert M. Smith award from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Ryan was a former member of the Minutemen of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, the Pittsburgh Field Club and the Pittsburgh Athletic Association. He was a current member of the Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church. Ryan enjoyed skeet shooting, fly fishing and tying his own flies. Ryan was a member of the Millvale Sportman’s Club where he enjoyed skeet shooting with The Fossils weekly. He also participated in the Golden Triangle Skeet League. Ryan enjoyed spending time relaxing at Seabrook Island, SC and he was the Creek Watch Villas Owners Association Board President from 2015-2020. Ryan was a loving husband, supportive father and he and his stories will be missed by family and friends. A private burial will be held at St. Christopher on Seabrook Island, SC. In remembrance of Ryan’s life, the family asks that donations be made to the Allegheny Plateau Audubon Society and the Allegheny Front Hawk Watch.
