Andrea Louise Hilley Obituary

Andrea Louise Hilley, 74 Brewster, MA. Andrea Louise Hilley of Brewster, née Mumm and known to her friends as Andy, died at home on June 16, 2021 of pancreatic cancer, which was also the cause of death of her late husband, John Anthony Hilley, in 2000. She was the loving and much-loved mother of Chris, Erin, and Jeremy Hilley and grandmother (Grandy) to Ava Fae and Fiona Isolde (daughters of Chris Hilley and Meadow Dibble) and Madelyn Grace (daughter of Jeremy Hilley and Kristen Fahrenz Hilley). In addition, Andy leaves her brother, Richard, of Asheville, North Carolina, and his family. Andy was able to spend her final weeks in her home thanks to the doting care provided by her children, who were with her every day since her diagnosis in early April, and with support from Hospice Care. Andy was born in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin on February 27, 1947 to Allen Edward Mumm and Shirley June (Banks) Mumm and moved to Florida with her family after kindergarten. She graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School and went to the University of South Florida, Tampa, where she met John. They married in 1969 and celebrated with a cheeseburger brunch. A terrific cook, Andy never met a hamburger she didn’t like, especially if it came from a take-out window. The couple moved to Cape Cod in the early ‘70s, settling first in Eastham, then Wellfleet, and finally into their Brewster home on Main Street in 1979. Andy worked the counter at the Orleans Post Office for 27 years (remember the nice smiling lady to the right?). She also worked briefly selling tickets at the Orleans movie theater (at the current site of the Route 6A CVS), and worked for jazz musicians Bob Wilber and Pug Horton. Andy loved to travel and went on many great adventures with family and friends including, most recently, to Germany with Erin. Previous trips included Greece, Spain, Macedonia, France, Sicily, the Azores, and Peru. Andy was a good traveler, putting considerable effort into learning languages and the lay of the land. Closer to home, she and a good friend walked, over time, the length of the Cape. In Brewster, she was an 18-year participant in “Sunday at Six,” a dinner group of friends among whom she was especially known and revered for her desserts. On Sunday mornings, she would meet with dear friends in what began as an exercise group and transformed to include gathering for pie, crafting, and other pursuits. She enjoyed making crafts with and for her grandchildren—including doll house miniatures and papier mâché beasts—working in her beautiful yard, completing New York Times crossword puzzles, reading, staying informed about political and environmental issues, and most of all, being with her family. Andy was unflappable, capable, and calm. She will be deeply missed by her family and many close friends who appreciated her steadfast presence, dry wit, and telling facial expressions. She rose to any occasion and in her generous and lowkey way offered comfort and help where needed. A gathering to celebrate Andy’s life will be held in the fall. Be assured that there will be desserts!
