Arthur Albert Klekner, Lieutenant Colonel, WW11 veteran, part of the Greatest Generation died Sunday, January 22, 2017 in Fairfax, Virginia. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Born in Newton Falls, Ohio September 23, 1920 to Ida and Jacob Klekner the family soon move to Beaver Falls, Pa where he grew up. He entered Ohio State University in 1940 but enlisted in the US Army the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He married the late Margaret Twinem in 1947, his hometown sweetheart. He is survived by two daughters, Christine Felker and Margaret Klekner, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He graduated in 1943 from Officer Candidate School and was platoon leader in the 409th Infantry Regiment of the 103rd Division, where he experienced extensive combat in Germany and France. Art's post war service took the family back to Germany on several assignments. He served with the Army Engineers, Army Counter Intelligence Corps, Military Intelligence, Office of the Provost Martial General, retiring in 1965. He then served with other civilian agencies including General Accounting Office and the Department of State. Art received numerous awards including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. This past year he was given the French Chevalier Legion of Honor for his WWII service. After his retirement from the army, he was honored with the Meritorious Civilian Service Medal and the Commander's Medal for Civilians. Art formed the National Capitol Chapter of the Army Counter Intelligence Corps Veterans (ACICV). He designed the ACICV flag and started the Day of Remembrance which is held annually. He and his wife Margie, were active in the community and longtime members of Bruen Chapel United Methodist Church. They participated on many boards and could be found singing in the choir, hosting the annual July 4th picnic and the Christmas Eve party. Family and friends from around the world were always welcomed in the Klekner house and they routinely opened their home to those less fortunate. He was an avid outdoors man and known for his fishing and hunting stories. Art loved his Ohio State Buckeyes and was an avid Redskins fan. He honored God, his family and his country.
