Charles Lyle White, Jr. Colonel, U.S. Army, Ret. Charles was the loving husband of Nora Patterson White, who died in 2012. He was the dear father of Gordon White, Susan Brown, and Lisa Abbott; devoted grandfather of David, Ed, and Andrew White, Ben and Hannah Brown, and Caroline and Chloe Abbott; proud great-grandfather (G-G Pa) of Connor and Ethan White, and had a close relationship with his nephew, Jeff White. He was also loved by his daughter-in-law, Alicia White, and sons-in-law, Robert Brown and Chuck Abbott. Charles lived in Fairfax, VA for 35 years before moving to Leesburg, VA in 2005. Charles enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1948. He received his commission upon graduation from OCS, after which he served in the Korean War from Dec. 1950 to Feb. 1952 with the 92nd AAA AW Battalion, 1st Cavalry. He continued to serve as an Air Defense Artillery officer, ultimately as Commander of the 2nd Battalion, 71st Artillery in Korea from August 1966 to October 1967. He went on to serve at the Pentagon as a member of the Army General Staff, and with the Army Materiel Command. He retired with the rank of Colonel in August of 1974 after 27 years of service. He went on to a second career with the Blue Cross/Blue Shield Association, from which he retired in 1992. He was a member of Vienna Presbyterian Church in Vienna, VA for 40 years, during which he served as an elder and Clerk of the Session. He was active in Bible study and fellowship groups, and always enjoyed singing. Charles died peacefully on October 21, 2014. He will be missed by his loved ones and many friends as someone who had a ready smile, was generous in sharing anecdotes from his rich and varied life experiences, and was a cheerful and interested listener. The funeral service will be held at Vienna Presbyterian Church, 124 Park Street, Vienna, VA on Friday, Oct. 31, 2014 at 2:30 pm.
