Carolyn O. Miller Obituary

Carolyn Owens Miller of Reston, VA, aged 79, died peacefully at home on Saturday, April 16, 2016. Carol was born on October 1, 1936 in Charleston, SC, the only child of Sherod Harvey Owens and Jeanette Georgia Metcalfe. Although she spent much of her childhood in Paducah, KY, and San Juan, PR, Carol always called South Carolina home. She returned to Charleston in 1949 to attend prep school at Ashley Hall, and returned again after two years of study at Duke University. Carol completed her education at the College of Charleston, where she received a degree in Biology. Following graduation Carol attended the Medical University of South Carolina and became a medical technologist. Carol met her future husband, Aloysius R. Miller, on Sullivan's Island, SC in 1959. After marrying in Charleston on June 16, 1962, the couple entered a busy period in their lives, adding five children to their family while relocating four times in eight years. Carol finally settled in Reston, VA, in September, 1970, where she somehow managed to feed, clothe, and nurture her family while managing a conflicting schedule of school programs, swim team practices, soccer games, CCD classes, scout meetings, and doctor's appointments. Carol was an accomplished cook and always at her finest during the holidays; many of the family traditions she started continue to this day. As her children became more independent, Carol returned to work as a medical technician at the Arthritis Rehabilitation Center, then in Washington, DC, for whom she worked for more than 20 years. Carol also joined the choir at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Washington, DC and sang with the Georgetown Community Chorale. When she had spare time, she filled it with friends, reading, exercise classes, travel, and the theater. In addition to her husband Al, Carol is survived by her children Chris Miller of Belcamp, MD, Greg Miller of Sterling VA, Kate (Miller) Cowart of Sterling, VA, Andrew Miller of Vienna, VA, Jennifer (Miller) Thornberg of Danville, CA. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren: Alex Miller, Troy Miller, Ben Miller, Max Miller, Sam Miller, Luke Miller, Eric Miller, Evan Miller, Elizabeth Miller, Jackson Miller, Ella Thornberg, and Calvin Thornberg. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at St. John Newmann Catholic Church in Reston, VA at 11:00, May 2, 2016. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Cancer Research Institute. Funeral Home: Money & King Funeral Home 171 W. Maple Ave. Vienna, VA US 22180
