Michael D. “Mike” Tanner, 66, of Arkansas City passed away Thursday, June 10, 2021, at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS. Cremation has been effected. Friends may greet the family Friday, June 18, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm in the parlor at First United Methodist Church. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 19, 2021, at the First United Methodist Church in Arkansas City. Reverend Stephanie Wall-Brown will officiate. Mike was born October 6, 1954, to Charles F. and Betty J. (Amos) Tanner in Arkansas City. Mike grew up and attended schools in Arkansas City, graduating from Arkansas City High School in 1972. After high school Mike attended and graduated from Cowley College, earning his Machinist and Welding Certificate. Mike worked as a machinist for a few years and then went to work for John Morrell Meat Packing (Rodeo Meats) in 1975. In 1982, he moved to Sioux Falls, SD for his job and worked for John Morrell until his retirement in 2003. During his time in Sioux Falls, he also owned and operated a business named Mike’s Custom Auto Body. On May 15, 1999, Mike married Christine Carpenter in Canton, SD. The couple made their home in Worthing, SD, until moving to Arkansas City in 2003. Mike became a caretaker for his father (Chuck) until his passing. He then worked at Orscheln’s for a few years before fulfilling a life-long dream and opening Bulldog Tire and Automotive in 2017. Mike loved cars and anything with a motor in it. Mike enjoyed working with his hands and had a curiosity that motivated him to investigate, study and learn the way things work. He then used that knowledge to teach others. Mike enjoyed fishing, especially at Table Rock Lake. He was known for "wearing out" episodes of American Pickers and Counting Cars. He had a hilarious sense of humor and was known for playing pranks. Most of all, he loved and cherished spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife Christine of the home; children Brian Tanner(Joyce) of Luther, OK; Erika Hansen (Troy) of Irene, SD; Audra Tanner (Kelly Hansen) of Sioux Falls, SD; Jeff Tanner of Sioux Falls, SD; mother Betty Tanner of Arkansas City; brother Bruce Tanner(Debra) of Olathe, KS; 13 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles F. Tanner and his grandson, Matthew Thomas Tanner. A memorial has been established for the Cowley County Humane Society.
