Vance E. Faulkenberg Indianapolis, Indiana Obituary

Vance E. Faulkenberg

Vance Earl Faulkenberg, 100, of Martinsville, passed away on June 11, 2021.  He was born on March 10, 1921 in the community of Celina, near Branchville, IN (Perry County) to the late W. Frank and Nannie (Carmickle) Faulkenberg. He met his beloved wife, Ila Arminda Smith, at the Hobby House restaurant in Ft. Wayne, IN, where they were both employed. They married on April 12, 1946 and were devoted to one another for 66 years. The couple lived and worked at the Eastern Grill in Ft. Wayne until Vance opened the Roof Restaurant and Drive-in. To make way for the construction of I-69 in 1959, Vance closed the restaurant and moved his family to Indianapolis where he joined brothers John and Fred in establishing Faulkenberg Printing Co. Vance and Ila spent nearly 30 years of retirement in Florida. Upon Ila’s death in 2012, Vance returned to Indiana, happily “coming out of retirement” to make deliveries for Faulkenberg Printing Co. He was an active member of Center United Methodist Church in Indianapolis and First United Methodist Church of New Port Richey in Florida. Vance had an entrepreneurial spirit, a strong work ethic, a giving nature, and a deep commitment to his family. He enjoyed the company of friends, rarely passed a yard sale without stopping, and always had a joke to share. Vance was preceded in death by his parents and wife; brothers, John, Harold and Fred; sisters, Betty, Jean and Mary; his son-in-law, Jack; and his son, Stephen. He is survived by sons, David (Corliss) Faulkenberg, and James Faulkenberg; daughter, Wauneta Berga; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Faulkenberg; 7 grandchildren, 4. great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.            Arrangements have been entrusted to G. H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home, Indianapolis, IN. Vance’s family will gather for a private committal service at Branchville-Walker Cemetery where he will be laid to rest. To honor Vance, add an extra scoop of bird seed outside to feed the wild birds that he loved to see! In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions payable to Branchville-Walker Cemetery, ATTN: John D. Galey, President, 23883 Ottoman Road, St. Croix, IN 47576 or Kathy Suhrheinrich, Secretary, 23300 St. Croix Road, St. Croix, IN 47576.
