James Richard Anderson, 72, of New London, died Thursday, June 10, 2021 at Park Place in Mt. Pleasant. He was born March 18, 1949 in Mt. Pleasant to Richard Elwin and Virginia Garmoe Anderson. He married Catherine Pobanz; they divorced. He then married Mary Beth Strause; she died January 25, 2015. Jim was a 1967 graduate of New London High School; worked at JI Case and later owned Main Street Market in New London. He was a member of the New London Volunteer Fire Department, enjoyed yardwork, antique cars, feeding and watching the birds, his cat Charlie, and was known for his witty one-liners. Survivors include his sons Michael (Shelley) Anderson of Mt. Pleasant and Tom (Molly) Anderson of Elkhorn, Nebraska; step-daughters Teri (Bob) Magdefrau of Mt. Pleasant and Traci (Sam) Rupp of Johnston, Iowa; eight grandchildren; one sister Connie (Greg) Schurbon of New London; two nieces; and his special friend Felicia Sharp of New London and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Beth and his parents. A memorial service for Mr. Anderson will be held at 10:00 Tuesday at Elliott Chapel, New London with Pastor Nathan Cooper officiating. Visitation will begin at noon Monday with the family receiving friends from 4:00 until 7:00 pm. According to his wishes, his body will be cremated and inurnment will be held at a later date.
