Durham - Gaylord William Hamm, 98, died June 10, 2021 at Hillsboro Community Hospital in Hillsboro. He was born September 23, 1922 North of Durham on the Family Farm to William and Leah (Schuber) Hamm. He married Valera Graves October 1, 1948 in Florence. He was a Farmer / Rancher and drove school bus for many years. Survivors include: wife, Valera Hamm of Durham; son, James Gaylord (Myrna) Hamm of rural Tampa; daughters, Bonnie Jean (Larry) Winter of Silver Lake, Barbara Fay (Ron) Williams of Glenpool, Oklahoma; brother, Gus (Mildred) Hamm of Hillsboro; sisters, Arlene Pankratz of Hillsboro, Marcella Mohn of Hillsboro; 8 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild. Celebration of Life service 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 14, 2021 at Durham Baptist Church in Durham officiated by Pastor Curtis Wiens. Interment in Durham Park cemetery rural Durham. Online condolences at www.jostfuneralhome.com Life Sketch Taken from the Funeral Bulletin Gaylord Hamm passed away peacefully on June 10, 2021 at Hillsboro Community Hospital surrounded by his family at the age of 98. Gaylord was born to William “Bill” and Leah (Schuber) Hamm on September 23, 1922 at the family farm northwest of Durham. He attended Red Top One Room School and graduated from Durham High School, class of 1941. Gaylord married Valera Graves on October 1, 1948 in Florence, Kansas. They were blessed with 72 years of marriage and three children; Bonnie Winter, Barbara Williams and James “Jim” Hamm. Gaylord worked as a farmer and rancher his entire life. He also was a school bus driver for Hillsboro-Durham-Lehigh school district for 30 years. He was a member of the Durham Baptist Church and a Lions Club Member. Gaylord loved the Lord, his family and farming. He loved to laugh, even at his own pranks. He was still driving the tractor working ground at the age of 96. He was known in the later years for driving around and around and around in his pickup truck, checking the crops, cattle and water tanks. He enjoyed watching the wildlife while he waited for the tank to fill. Gaylord is survived by his wife of 72 years, Valera Hamm, daughters Bonnie Winter (Larry) of Silver Lake, KS, Barbara Williams (Ron) of Glenpool, OK and son James Hamm (Myrna) of rural Tampa.; his sisters, Arlene Pankratz and Marcella Mohn and brother Gus Hamm (Mildred) all of Hillsboro Gaylord adored his grandchildren: Pat Winter, Ginger Robert (Matt), April Conner (Thad), Deron Williams, Brian Williams, Sara Goldsby, Lucas Hamm (Amber) and Morganne Sobba (Adam). Great grandchildren: Madison Swann (Mason), Parker Winter, Mercedes Williams, Portlynn Williams, Carter Robert, Kaden Goldsby, MacKenzie Goldsby, Jaxson Hamm, Brooks Hamm and a great great grandson expected in July. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Bill and Leah Hamm, brothers-in-law Paul Pankratz, Oliver Mohn and Evan Wendt; sister-in-law Ida Mae Wendt; nephews Steve Wendt, Bob Haug, nieces Sherilyn (Pankratz) Kadel, Jacquie (Wendt) Sjodahl and great nephew Chirstopher Mohn. Gaylord was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who will be dearly missed and so fondly remembered. We are assured Gaylord is happy in Heaven farming until his heart is content. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the outpouring of support, love and prayers from family and friends, Parkside Homes, Hillsboro Hospital Comfort Care, Dr Reeh, Pastor Curtis Wiens and Pastor Brad Penn.
