Kay Baim Shapiro Obituary

Kay Baim Shapiro, age 87, passed away on June 10, 2021 at her home in Pine Bluff, AR.


Born Helene Kay Baim June 17, 1933 in Muskogee, OK, she was the daughter of the late B. Bennie and Norma Cohen Baim.


She graduated from Pine Bluff High School in 1951 and went on to attend the University of Oklahoma.

After meeting on a blind date in Dallas, Kay married David Shapiro June 21st, 1959, at the Pines Hotel in downtown Pine Bluff. They were married 61 years until he preceded her in death (October 21st, 2020).


Kay helped run her family business, Baim’s Department Store, which was a staple on Main Street in Pine Bluff from 1906-1994.


Survivors include: sons Jeff of Ruston, LA, Greg (Marla) of White Hall, and daughter Renee (Brandon Mills) of Little Rock. Grandchildren are Brandon Shapiro of Bossier City, LA, Gavin Shapiro of White Hall, and Mason Rush (Abigale) of White Hall. Her great grandson is Grayson Rush.


Kay volunteered much of her time to community and civic organizations including Temple Anshe Emeth, the American Red Cross, Central AR Legal Services, the Junior League of Pine Bluff, Friends of the Library, League of Women Voters, PTA, planning reunions for PBHS class of 1951, and knitting bears with the women’s group at the Hazel Street Church of Christ. She enjoyed playing mahjong and bunko.


The family wants to give special thanks to friends and caregivers Debbie Smith, Hirut Weldesemayat, Delois Battles, and Margaret Robinson.


In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Pine Bluff Chapter of the American Red Cross.


The family will have a private burial in the Jewish Cemetery.
