Evelyn Souza, 93, passed away on Wednesday, June 9. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, and grand and great-great nieces and nephews. She was the fifth and last remaining child of Joao de Deus Lima and Maria de Gloria Affonso. All of her brothers Joe, Tony and Herman, and sisters Mary and Lorraine preceding her in death as well as her nephew, Richard Domingoes and niece Sandra Domingoes. Evelyn was born in San Leandro, CA where she lived all of her life, except for a brief time in Franks Track in the Delta and a short time on Jones Street in Oakland. During WWII Evelyn worked at the Rio Theater in San Leandro, then as a cashier at the women’s dress store, The Darling Shop in Oakland. She then began working for the Golden Grain Company in 1941 when they opened a plant a few blocks from her home and she remained there packaging the famous Rice-A-Roni until the plant was closed in 1991 and she then retired. In February 1952 Evelyn married Milton Souza, who was from the Ashland area of San Leandro. They were married for forty-one years when “Uncle Milt” passed away on May 5, 1993. They had no children but enjoyed the love and respect of all their nieces and nephews.
