Elaine Hanson Obituary

Elaine Marie Hanson (Marie) was born on June 2, 1929. She grew up in an extended family on the West Side of Manhattan in New York City during the depression, where her out of work uncles were always ready to entertain her with card games and pranks. Little did she know then that the small boxes she delivered for them contained betting slips. She graduated from St. Michael’s in 1947 and shortly thereafter, she married Robert Hanson and began her career as a Coast Guard wife, travelling throughout the country with her growing family as her husband took on different assignments. Military wives often are functioning as single mothers due to their husbands’ deployments. In 1955 she had to move from NYC to Hawaii alone with three children under six years old, only to have her husband’s ship leave for three months shortly after arriving. Her favorite postings were the four-year stint in Hawaii, where, among other things, she taught hula lessons; living on Governor’s Island in NYC, and in Seattle where the family enjoyed the natural wonders of the area. Other highlights of her Coast Guard career included mentoring young officers’ wives and participating in the Tall Ships Parade in 1976 out of Woods Hole, Massachusetts during their final posting. During retirement in Pocasset, MA, she took up a new career at the Barnstable County Hospital and enjoyed travelling to the Caribbean with friends (the infamous ‘Stitch and Bitch’ group who never did any sewing), with occasional trips to Europe. She leaves behind four children, four grandchildren and a great grandchild, who she got to meet shortly before she died. Funeral arrangements will be under the care of the Bartlett Funeral Home, 338 Court Street, Plymouth. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, June 30th at 10:00 am at St. John the Evangelist, 841 Shore Road, Pocasset. Interment will follow at 11:30 am at Massachusetts National Cemetery.
