Barbara Montgomery LOVELAND, Ohio Obituary

Barbara Montgomery

Barbara Darrell Montgomery (known as “Bobbi”) of Cincinnati, Ohio, died at her home, Thursday, June 3, 2021, after a heroic eighteen-month battle against a vicious, relentless, remorseless disease—acute myeloid leukemia. She was born February 8, 1946, to the late Warren and Phyllis Darrell in Far Rockaway, New York. She is survived by her life partner of over thirty years, Bob Mortellite of Cincinnati, her brother, Warren (Pam) Darrell of Wilmington, North Carolina, her sister Diane Darrell of Cincinnati, her sister Debra (Grant) Wolf of Franklin, North Carolina, her daughter, Susan (Steve) Myers, of Cincinnati, her son, Matthew (Adrienne) Montgomery, of Methuen, Mass., and six grandchildren: Joe Kreider, Sam Kreider, Grace Kreider, Henry Jablonski, Booth Montgomery, and Tate Montgomery, and Bob’s children: Heather (Sean) Mortellite , and Nick (Kelly) Mortellite, and Bob’s grandchildren: Kayla (Cam) Mortellite and Christopher Taylor, and Bob’s great grandchildren: Hailey King and Julian King. She graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1968. She completed her Masters Degree of Arts in Education from Northern Kentucky University in 1987. Strongly influenced by her belief in public service, she served as a board member for Planned Parenthood and for the March of Dimes. She was a founder of the Heartstone Foundation helping people pay their medical bills. She taught in the public schools of Big Walnut, Delaware, and Batavia, Ohio, for thirty-one years, served as a Praxis Assessor for the State of Ohio, and supervised student teachers for Mt. St. Joseph College. She finished up her working career with what she called “a fun job” at REI sharing her outdoor expertise and helping people introduce more of nature into their lives. A devoted athlete since childhood, she was co-author of the book Across America by Bicycle: Alice and Bobbi’s Summer on Wheels. Throughout her life she modeled so many positive traits: She was kind, loving, generous, thoughtful, sensitive, honest, smart, tough, articulate, energetic, dedicated, optimistic, gentle, consistent, and loyal—a true friend to family members and all those in her orbit. She filled all her roles—as life partner, mother, grandmother, sister, friend, teacher in a way that leaves us all so very grateful for her time with us. Her absence leaves a huge empty space in our hearts and lives. A celebration of her life will take place on Saturday, October 2, 2021.
