John Adley Houser, 65, best known as Captain John, died Saturday, May 22, 2021 in Soldotna, Alaska after a brief illness. A memorial service will take place at a later date when keeping with his wishes his ashes will be spread at sea in the Cook Inlet. The son of Alfred Joe Houser and Pearl Jordan Houser, John was born at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17,1956. John’s early years were spent moving with his family to Air Force bases in Texas and Germany. John was an exceptional member of the Boy Scouts of America attaining his Eagle Scout. John enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1973 and served four years, his service brought him to Alaska and cemented his love of Alaska and the sea. John worked his way through the ranks of maritime professionals and was a licensed Captain having just returned from the Aleutian Islands prior to his death. Motorcycles were one of John’s great passions and he always had at least one under construction. A well-known storyteller, John spun tall tales and historical facts with equal amounts of glee and a twinkle in his eye. Some of his treasured memories included serving as Captain on a tug that transported NASA spacecraft through the Panama Canal, riding his Harley cross-country and spending time on his deck with his wife. John is survived by his wife of 21 years, Linda Houser, his son Joe Houser, his mother Pearl Jordan Houser of Carlsbad, New Mexico, elder sister Bonnie Hixson (children Jordan and wife Jenny and Terrence and wife Cassie) of Aurora, Colorado; younger siblings Sallie Houser-Hanfelder (husband Ted of Parker, Colorado and their sons Ryan and wife Rachel of Phoenix, Arizona and Ben and wife Molly of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi); brother Chuck Houser of Carlsbad, New Mexico; and sister Elizabeth Houser Lickliter (husband Kenneth ) of Carlsbad, New Mexico. He is also survived by his much-loved Aunt Betty Brooke and her children of San Diego, California. John had a special knack of developing a circle of amazing, much-loved, and close-knit family of friends including, Bean, Denny, Bobby Humphries and too many others to list.
