Robert M. Callery, 84, of Hopedale passed away Fri. Dec. 11, 2015 at home with his family by his side. He was the husband of Eileen M. (Scahill) Callery. Mr.Callery had been employed at General Motors Assembly Plant in Framingham for 25 years before his retirement. He had previously been employed at the former Draper Corporation in Hopedale. Mr Callery was born April 20, 1931 in Brockton the son of the late John F. and Saydie (Tilton) Callery. He had been a resident of Milford and played both High School baseball and Legion and got a base hit at Fenway Park while playing right field for the Milford Legion. He then lived in Mendon before moving to Hopedale in 1968. Robert was a graduate of Milford High School, Class of 1949. Mr. Callery served in the US Air Force during the Korean War and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was present at the detonation of the world's first thermonuclear weapon, the hydrogen bomb on the Eniwetok atoll in the Marshall Islands in the South Pacific Ocean on November 1, 1952. The test included thousands of Air Force, Army and Navy personnel. The bomb, codenamed "Mike", was detonated remotely, from the control ship Estes, thirty miles away from ground zero. From there he went back to Kirkland Air Force Base in New Mexico. Mr. and Mrs. Callery observed their 56th wedding anniversary in Aug. 2015. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family. In addition to his wife Eileen, he is survived by three sons; Robert J. and his wife Donna Callery and James P. and his wife Cheryl Callery all of Hopkinton, Paul C. and his wife Donna Callery of Bellingham, one daughter; Mary M. and her husband Matthew Smith of Hopedale, one sister, Grace Lovely of Mendon, 11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday Dec. 15, 2015 at 10 AM in Sacred Heart Church, 187 Hopedale St. Hopedale. Burial with be at a later date. Memorial donations may be made the Salmon VNA & Hospice Care, 37 Birch St., Milford, MA 01757.
