It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful husband, father, grandfather and uncle, George Little. He passed away at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Saturday May 15, 2021, a week shy of his 84th birthday. Born in Bellshill Scotland, he was the son of the late George Little and Mary (Wyper) Little.

George was an eloquent, beautiful, kind soul who loved his wife Pearl with all his heart for the 62 years they were together. She was always “my Pearl” to him.  He was fiercely proud of his daughters, Jacqueline Ann and Alison Joan and sons-in law, Ross and Tim and his grand children Aaron and Lily. George was a strong believer in social justice and exemplified that in the way he lived his life. In his early years in Canada where he settled and made his home in 1964, he and his wife Pearl started the first Saint John Non-Smoking Society, campaigning for smoke free restaurants and workplaces. He raised over $87,000 for UNICEF through his yearly fundraising campaigns at Simonds High, where he was head of the English department for over 30 years. He was selected to represent Canada at a UNICEF conference in Tanzania in 1988. He looked for political justice as Leader of the New Brunswick New Democratic Party from 1980 to 1988 where the party received more than 10% of the province wide vote for the first time and they also won seats in the provincial legislature under his leadership.

Professionally, George began teaching in Oban, Scotland then Aden, Saint John High School and he finished his happy career with over 30 years at Simonds High School.  He also published many poems, and a book of short stories called The Many Deaths of George Robertson in 1994. He loved to read and sing. He was a member of the Saint John Chorale for several years.

He and Pearl travelled all over the world to his beloved Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, California and they spent 20 years, during the winter months in their second home of Alvor, Portugal where they had many friends and fond memories. They loved to camp and spent summers while their daughters were growing up at Grand Lake and Mactaquac Provincial Parks.

George is survived by his beloved wife Pearl Floey (Cassels) of 62 years; his daughters Jacqueline Ann Stroud (Ross), Rothesay; Alison Joan Little (Tim) Halifax; and his dearest grandchildren Dr. Aaron Christopher Stroud (Halifax) and Lily Jing Ya Crooks (Halifax); and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his sisters Pearl Fraser (Bob). Flora Wilson (John), May Sneddon (George) and a brother Jack Little (Frances).

Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424).  Due to Covid and family request there will be no visitation or service. A family memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation be made to UNICEF, The Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick or a charity of your choosing.
