Leo B. Kuehl Obituary

Leo B. Kuehl, 104, formerly of Ambler and Glenside, passed away on Saturday, April 24 at Rydal Park in Jenkintown, where he had lived for the past 10 years. Leo, who was known to many as “Pop”, is survived by his two daughters, Lizanne Newmiller and Marybeth Kuehl (Jeff Ballard); two granddaughters, Megan Sweeney (Christopher), and Rachel Newmiller; and one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Marie “Emmy” Sweeney. Leo is also survived by many extended family members with whom he had shared close relationships. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years and the love of his life, Elizabeth “Betty” Kuehl. Leo was born to John and Lily Kuehl on June 8, 1916 in Westbrook, Minnesota. He was the second of five children and spent much of his childhood working on his uncle’s farm in Wausau, Nebraska, memories of which he often fondly spoke. After graduating high school among the top of his class, he went on to serve in the 4th Marine Air Wing during World War II. Leo was extremely proud of his service and enjoyed talking about his time in the Pacific. Following his military service, he relocated to Glenside, PA where he spent the next 47 years working for Honeywell as a supervisor of cost accounting. It was at Honeywell where he met his wife, Betty. While working full-time for Honeywell, Leo attended night classes at Temple University. Over the course of 15 years, Leo earned enough credits to not only graduate with a bachelor’s degree, but also graduated magna cum laude and was named President’s Scholar for attaining the highest scholastic average in the business school. While residing in Glenside with his family, Leo also dedicated his time to the Glenside Fire Company. Throughout his 65 years of service with the fire company, he held several posts, including head engineer, treasurer, head of the finance and nominating committees, and served on the board of directors. Leo made his mark in the fire company in finances. He automated dues collection and standardized the reporting of income and expenses. He then persuaded other fire companies in the township to do the same. Leo’s contributions also allowed the fire company to develop long-term plans for the purchase of updated equipment and fire trucks, an accomplishment of which he was extremely proud. In the final years of his life, Leo cared for his wife as she battled colon cancer. Following her passing, he moved from their home in Ambler to Rydal Park. In honor of Betty’s memory, Leo volunteered as a companion for hospice patients in their homes. While residing at Rydal Park, Leo also served on many committees and led an effort for Rydal Park to switch to a more sustainable light bulb, which ended up saving the company $4,000 a year – another proud accomplishment. Above all, Leo loved his family more than anything. He was a kind and loving husband, a dedicated father, a proud grandfather, and a doting great-grandfather. He was known throughout his life for his selflessness, his kind and thoughtful spirit, his generosity, his integrity, and for making an impact on the lives of so many. Relatives and friends are invited to a military burial on Tuesday, June 8 at 9:45am at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Road, Newtown, PA 18940. The family respectfully asks that those who attend wear a face mask. In lieu of flowers, donations in Leo’s memory can be made to the Glenside Fire Company, 210 W. Glenside Ave, Glenside, PA 19038.
