Dot Phillips Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Dorothy “Dot” E. (Speight) Phillips, on May 9, 2021, surrounded by her loving family.  Dot was everything one could hope for in a mother, so it is only fitting she left this world on Mother’s Day.  She was born in Saint John on July 15, 1931 to the late Archibald and Hazel (Short Nelson) Speight and was the loving wife to her late husband, John “Jack” Phillips.

Dot worked as a School Bus driver in District 20 for 16 years and garnered a lot of respect from all of the children she drove.  In her earlier years she coached minor hockey and was involved in many organizations in her community including the Friendly Quilters, Peninsula Pearls Senior’s Club and Fundy Ladies Bowling League. She volunteered with the Ladies Auxiliary Legion, Branch #62, Moss Glen, the Kingston Ambulance and always attended the James Williams Hall Thursday night card games.

She is survived by her 6 children, David, Terry (Brenda), Kim (Carmel), Douglas (Bonnie), Stephen (Gabriella) and Cathy; daughter-in-law Helen; brother Joseph (Joan) Speight; 8 grandchildren, Wayne Phillips, Krystal Phillips, Drake Phillips, John Wesley Phillips, Jaclyn Phillips, Jessica Marie, Stephen Phillips and John Sutton; 17 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her son John; brother Melbourne Speight; sisters Jean McMahon, Mary Smith, Helen Flewelling and Phyllis Speight; grandchildren, Tashia Boyce, Douglas Phillips and David Scott Phillips; and daughter-in-law Carol.

Special thanks to the Dialysis Unit and Palliative Care Unit, SJRH for the wonderful care provided to Dot during her stay.

Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424), with visitation being held on Tuesday from 3-7 p.m.  A Celebration of Dot’s life will be held at Fundy Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday May 12, 2021 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in Hardings Point Cemetery.  Due to the current pandemic and public health restrictions, seating is limited. Friends are asked to RSVP by calling 646-2424. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or to the Dialysis Unit at the SJRH.
