Peter Wayne Johnson Obituary

(May 27, 1942 - April 29, 2021) It is with a heavy heart that we share that we have lost a pillar of the Johnson family today. Peter Wayne Johnson, passed away on Thursday, April 29th, peacefully in his sleep at Hastings Manor, after a 13 year battle of deteriorating health following two strokes. He fought long and hard, and finally found peace and respite while surrounded by his wife and sons. Born in Ottawa, raised in east Toronto (East York), predeceased by his father, Victor Jewell Johnson and mother Hazel Emma Maria Johnson (nee Mortson) and survived by his wife, Diane Kathleen Johnson (nee Hopkins), children Scott (Tamara) and Marc (Reagan), grandchildren who called him “Pa” (Mae, Avery, Oscar, Mason) and sister Arline (Brian.) Peter loved life and will be missed by his family, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Peter had many gifts and a particular passion for languages. He fell in love with the French language and Quebecois culture in high school. He studied languages (including Latin) and the classics at University of Toronto and became a teacher, sharing his love of French and Latin with 1000s of students across multiple high schools in Toronto, Trenton and Belleville. He met a particularly keen student in 1967 at Woburn Collegiate, who became his loving wife of 51 years at the time of his death. Peter was incredibly well-read and a student of a multitude of genres and was truly the "Google" for many before Google was invented...a walking encyclopedia. He was a lover of golf, good (and bad) humour, cryptic crosswords, genealogy, Jeopardy, the Masonic Lodge, Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity, and social events, where he learned to love Coca-Cola post-1985, when he met Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob. He also enjoyed coaching golf, T-ball and being a Beaver leader, amongst other community outreach ventures. Following retirement, he fell in love with wood-working, where he would spend hours at the lathe, making bowls, pens or anything he could turn, in addition he would make intricate wooden toys for all to enjoy - a modern day Santa Claus.
