Johnnie Mae Hendrix Obituary

Johnnie Mae (Austin) Hendrix, 88, traded her earthly home for her heavenly mansion on Monday, May 9, 2016, surrounded by her family. Johnnie Mae was born July 1, 1927 in Conway, Arkansas to the union of Ernest and Callie (Lewist) Austin. She was preceded in death by both parents; siblings, Mary, Harding and William; four nephews and two nieces. Johnnie Mae moved to Kansas City, Missouri as a child. She accepted Christ at an early age and united with Emmanuel Church, where she was a faithful servant for sixty years until her health began to fail. She served in several auxiliaries, but her biggest accomplishment was in proudly becoming a Mother of the church. Johnnie Mae was a cosmetologist by trade. She also held employment with Bendix, HUD Housing as a secretary, and Rainbow Mental Health as a mental health technician from which she retired after ten years of service. Johnnie Mae was also a foster grandparent for the Kansas City, Missouri School District and president of her senior citizens building for a number of years. In addition to all of her work and service, she loved to cook as a pastime. Johnnie Mae was always reinventing herself. She loved learning new things such as how to drive at the age of thirty-five. She went back to school to get her GED and also took computer classes in her later years, as she always wanted to keep up with the times. Johnnie Mae was united in marriage to James Woodard and to this union one daughter was born, Joy. This marriage was dissolved and she later married Jimmie Hendrix. From that union she gained a bonus son, Kent. She leaves to cherish her passing: five children, Edward Smith (Betty) of Seattle, WA, Joy Reese (Steven), Stanley Turner, Lester Turner (Rita) and Qyuenna Hendrix; fifteen grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren, and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives, church family and friends. Funeral services will be Saturday, May 21, 11:00 a.m. at Emmanuel Church. Interment XII Gates Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
