Bernita E. Johnson Obituary

Obituary Bernita E. Johnson Bernita E. Johnson, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, passed away on April 27, 2021, at the age of 69. Bernita, also affectionately known as “Bree,” was born on January 22, 1952, to Mr. and Mrs. Wheattie and Margie Johnson in Pineville, Louisiana, and was the second youngest of six children. Bernita attended Carter C. Raymond High School in Lecompte, Louisiana, then went on to study instrumental music education at the University of Southwestern Louisiana where she was a member of the Ragin’ Cajun Marching Band and the Symphonic Winds Ensemble; studied information science/technology and retail/business management and earned an associate’s degree from the Community College of Allegheny County; and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh where she majored in anthropology/history and minored in organizational psychology. She spent most of her career providing administrative and technical support to various hospitals, banks, law firms, engineering firms, mortgage companies, and numerous Fortune 500 companies. Bernita was the consummate social butterfly and enjoyed attending cultural and community events as well as planning events of her own. She loved volunteering her time and served as a volunteer for the Three Rivers Arts Festival since 1987, the EQT Children’s Theatre Festival, and the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival, among others. She was baptized at an early age at Union Baptist Church in Lecompte by the late Reverend W. L. Jackson and was an active member of Mt. Ararat Baptist Church in Pittsburgh. Bernita was preceded in death by her parents and brother Dewayne “Chee Dee” Johnson and is survived by her sisters Pam Johnson Pegues of Alexandria and Vera Johnson Mozee of Pineville, her brothers Wheatty Johnson, Jr. of Alexandria, and Gary Johnson of Lecompte, and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. We praise God for her life and the time that He allowed us to share together. We will miss her jovial nature, quirky spirit, infectious laughter, and the fun gift packages she would send (often for no reason at all), but delight in knowing that she is now among God’s angels and will forever live on in all our hearts and minds. A celebration of life memorial service will be held in her hometown of Lecompte in June at a date and time to be determined. Cards and flowers may be sent to: The Family of Bernita Johnson c/o Pam Pegues 1105A Jim Meyer Drive Alexandria, Louisiana 71303
