Paul Szarmach Obituary

Paul E. Szarmach, a native of Buffalo NY, was educated there at St. Joseph Collegiate Institute and Canisius College. He received his Ph.D. in English and Medieval Studies from Harvard University. A specialist in the literature of early medieval England, he was the author or editor of numerous editions and scholarly articles. Paul Szarmach taught from 1968-1970 at the U. S. Military Academy, concurrent with his military service. He left the Army with the rank of Captain, and from 1970 to 1994 he taught at Binghamton University, where he was Professor of English and Medieval Studies. He was Director of the Medieval Institute (and Professor of English and Medieval Studies) at Western Michigan University from 1995 to 2006. From there, he returned to Cambridge, MA where he was the Executive Director of the Medieval Academy of America and Editor of Speculum from 2006-2011. He was elected Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America in 2008. Paul Szarmach was honored with the Medal of Merit of Adam Mickiewicz University and the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. He is survived by his wife, Katherine O’Brien O’Keeffe. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Collegiate Institute, Buffalo, NY.
