Charles Edward Jenkins Obituary

Charles Edward Jenkins, III, of St. Francisville, LA died April 9, 2021, at 69 years old. He was born in Shreveport, LA to Don Green and Helen Huckabay Jenkins, and grew up in Mansfield, LA. He graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 1973 and Nashotah House Seminary in 1976. He was consecrated bishop coadjutor of Louisiana on January 31, 1998 and was invested as the tenth bishop of Louisiana on March 28, 1998. In 1975, he was married to Louise Hazel Jenkins at Nashotah House. Charles and Louise have two sons, Edward and Benjamin. Charles was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Nashotah House in 1992 and an honorary doctorate from the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, in 1999. In his continuing education, he studied for five years with Rabbi Edwin Friedman. Charles was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop James Brown in 1977. His first call was as assistant chaplain at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge where he served from 1976-77. He next served as assistant rector at Grace, Monroe, until 1979. In his only tenure out of state, he was called as rector of St. Mark's , Arlington, Texas where he served from 1979-1985. Charles was called as rector of St. Luke's, Baton Rouge, in 1985 where he served until his election as bishop coadjutor in 1997. In 2005 he was invited by Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold to join the delegation to address the Anglican Consultative Council's meeting as representatives of the Episcopal Church. And in the following year, Charles was named as a candidate for the 26th presiding bishop, head of the Episcopal Church of the U.S.A. Charles will be remembered by many for his wit and humor, and for his leadership and community rebuilding efforts following hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the fall of 2005. Among many of his efforts was partnering with Episcopal Relief and Development to form the diocesan Office of Disaster Response, and being involved in long-range community rebuilding plans, including Jericho Road, a ministry Jenkins started to help rebuild homes in New Orleans. He became a champion for the oppressed, a crusader for justice, and a seeker of the Beloved Community. He was prayerful to the depths of his being. He was, and is, a child of the Living God. Charles retired to St. Francisville, LA in 2009, where he served as bishop-in-residence at Grace Church, and often presided over services at St. John's Laurel Hill, the chapel of Grace Church. He is survived by his wife Louise; their two sons Edward Jenkins and his wife Beth of Clarksville, MD and Benjamin Jenkins of New Orleans, LA; their two grandchildren Eleanor and Claire; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
