Ellen Audrey Letang Salmon Arm, British Columbia Obituary

Ellen Audrey Letang

Ellen Audrey Letang of Sicamous, BC passed away on April 9th, 2021 with her daughter Alice at her side. She was 89 years old.

Born November 2, 1931, in Innisfail, Alberta to Myrl and Sarah Whitelock, Ellen was the oldest of four daughters; big sister to Ruby, Olive, and Betty. They moved to Vancouver when she was a young girl and that became home for the majority of her life. After her first husband passed away in 1952, Ellen met her lifelong love Martin Letang and they wed on June 13th, 1953. Together they raised five daughters: Iris, Myrl, Sally, Kathie, and Alice.

Ellen is survived by her daughters Myrl (Jim) Bordian, Kathie (Alvin) Hemmingson, and Alice Letang (Harry), her grandchildren Jason, Hope, Marty, Arlene (Rick), Richard, Thomas, Katrina, Elizabeth, and Julie (Wayne), 22 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren, her sister Betty and numerous others including nieces, nephews, and friends.

While Ellen will be missed dearly, there were also many loved ones waiting to greet her on the other side: her husband Martin, daughters Sally and Iris, son-in-law Dan, her parents, sisters Ruby and Ollie, and other friends and family members who she lost throughout the years.

After caring for her husband until his passing in 2000, and then her daughter Sally who passed from MS in 2007, Ellen moved to Sicamous. With the help of her daughter Alice, she kept her own home until she was hospitalized in 2021. She enjoyed walks around town, shopping, and lunches with her friends and neighbors at the nearby Seniors Centre. She treasured her children and grandchildren and cherished any opportunity to talk or spend time with them. Highlights were holidays and dinners spent with her family in Malakwa as well as regular calls and visits from those further away; especially the daily calls from her granddaughter Arlene.

Ellen appreciated the simple things in life like music, a good detective novel, crime shows on TV, her wall of family photos, and her collection of moose themed items. She also enjoyed adventure: summers camping around BC, travelling to visit family, houseboating, cruises to Alaska and even the Caribbean and Panama Canal. In recent years, as Ellen slowed down, she was happy to watch her family enjoy life and hear about their adventures and daily happenings while she sat in her chair with a rum and a Reece’s.

Due to the current situation, there will be no memorial at this time but one will be announced at a later date when we can safely gather.
