Barbara A. Michaud, 68, of Elk Point, South Dakota passed away Friday, April 16, 2021 at UnityPoint Health-St. Luke's in Sioux City, Iowa. Barbara Ann Michaud was born on April 29, 1952 to Frank and Delores Michaud. She grew up in Jefferson, SD later graduating from South Dakota State University with a degree in Early Childhood Development. She was employed by the state and worked to improve the lives of families living on our reservations. Barbara later won a scholarship to earn her Masters degree from the University of Chicago where she graduated with honors. She then went to work for the Chicago Association of Retarded Citizens (CARC). Later, she became the Director at Haven House, a shelter for abused women and children in Hammond, IN. She was once interviewed by Oprah Winfrey regarding one of her most tragic cases. Later, Barbara relocated to the Phoenix area where she taught Special Education for the Mesa Public School System. Retirement brought her back to her home state to Elk Point where she lived until her death. Barbara was known mostly for her sense of humor. She also enjoyed crafting, singing, played the piano and saxophone, loved kids and playing bridge. She traveled many places in her life, the highlight being the family trip to Quebec to meet fraternal family members. Barbara is survived by her sister, Carol of Flagstaff. AZ. There will be no services.
