Janice L. Schohl Obituary

DEFOREST- Janice “Jan” Schohl, age 68, passed away on Friday, April 9, 2021, at Agrace HospiceCare. She was born on Sept. 21, 1952, in Madison, the daughter of Merlin and Marian (Bergeman) Stoflet. She called Madison and the surrounding area home for her entire life. Jan graduated from La Follette High School in 1971. She married Ronald Wallom in 1973 and their daughter, Jennifer, was born in 1974. Ron passed away in 1976. In 1979, Jan married Wilmont “Monty” Schohl. They went on to have a second daughter, Kristin, who was born in 1982. Jan attended MATC and obtained her Licensed Practical Nurse certification. For a brief period, she worked at the Mendota Mental Health Center. In 1979, Jan answered a calling to work with young people and became an interpreter for the deaf and hearing impaired. She was hired by the Madison School District, where she performed her interpreter responsibilities with patience and kindness to students of all ages. She was adored by all of her students. Jan retired from this position in 2010. Jan had many interests; at the top of that list was sharing time with her family and friends. They were the center of her universe and there was nowhere she’d rather be than at home, surrounded by their love and laughter. Always the consummate host, she and her husband Monty were known for their holidays at “the homestead.” Whether she was preparing the family feast for all to enjoy, sitting down for a rousing round of “Pit” with the kids and grandkids, or having a “disco party” with her sissies, Jan was right in her element. She was also famous for her baking skills, ranging from her trademark griddle cookies and caramel brownies to her “world famous toast.” When she wasn’t playing hostess, Jan’s favorite place to be was in her comfy blue chair in the living room, enjoying an episode of “Big Bang Theory,” “The Crown,” “Everybody Loves Raymond,” “Two and a Half Men” or “Schitt’s Creek.” She always looked for an opportunity to laugh (and to make others do so), and her taste in entertainment reflected that. Jan was an avid Beatles fan her entire life, attending multiple Paul McCartney concerts and considering him to be an extended member of the family. Jan was a strong and gentle soul who was firm in her beliefs and her feelings while also keenly aware of and sensitive to other’s. She never hesitated to share her opinion but was always respectful and would always put others’ needs and wants above her own. She was a true listener, a deep thinker, a shoulder to lean on, a warm hug, and a voice of comfort and reason. Wherever life’s journey took her, as a wife, daughter, mother, granny, sissy, aunt, niece, or friend, Jan spread joy, light, and love. To her, the Beatles song “All You Need is Love” wasn’t just a song, it was a way of life. Janice is survived by her husband, Monty; daughters, Jenny Schohl (Tom Hopkins) and Kristin Schohl-Anderson; granddaughters, Taylor and Jenna Hopkins and Kaylee Anderson; as well as her mother, Marian Stoflet; sisters, Lyn (Mike) Nowakowski and Sharon (Ken) Diloreto; and brother, Steve (Marcheta) Stoflet. Jan was preceded in death by her father, Merlin Stoflet; and her first husband, Ronald Wallom. The entire family sincerely appreciates the heroic efforts of Jan and Monty’s neighbor, Brian, and the first responders with the Dane County Sheriff’s Department and DeForest EMS who performed life saving measures on Jan on March 30, 2021. Despite the tremendous efforts by everyone, Jan was not able to recover from the event she suffered that day. Nevertheless, it was these efforts that allowed us to be with her during her final days, and for that we will be forever grateful. We would also like to extend our sincerest thanks to the doctors and nurses who cared for her at Meriter, particularly Mary Jo “MJ,” as well as the staff at Agrace HospiceCare, and her nurse, Linda, who made Jan’s final hours as comfortable as possible. A Memorial Service will be held at Olbrich BOTANICAL Gardens, 3330 Atwood Ave., Madison, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 24, 2021, with Pastor Lex Liberatore presiding. A visitation will be held at Olbrich Botanical Gardens from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the number of people who may attend the actual service will be limited. Memorials may be made to Agrace HospiceCare or Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.
