William Alexander Richardson Obituary

William A. Richardson (Bill) of Smyrna, Delaware was born to the late Charles and Hester Richardson on August 17, 1928 in Dover, Delaware. He transitioned from his earthly life on Wednesday, April 14, 2021. In his personal life, Mr. Richardson married the late Maxine Heath Clark of Smyrna. From this union were eight children. He attended school in Dover, Delaware. Mr. Richardson enlisted in the Military Branch of the United States Army on November 9, 1950 with basic training at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Private Richardson’s stint in the military took him to Washington, DC; Camp Stoneman in California; Camp Drake, Japan; Incheon, Korea; Seoul, Korea and Kunduchi, Korea. Prior to his separation from the Army, Mr. Richardson had obtained Corporal status. After his active time in the Army, Mr. Richardson then transitioned to Active Reserves primarily stationed in Dover, Delaware; however travels took him to Fort Belvoir and Fort Picket, Virginia; Fort Bragg, North Carolina ; Fort Drum, New York; Fort Knox, Kentucky; and Camp Shelby, Mississippi. After 27 years of Active Reserves, Mr. Richardson retired as E/7 (SSgt.) William A. Richardson. Post army reserves, he was past Commander of Post 1207 (Dover, De) and Past Exalted Ruler of Rid of Dover Lodge #1125 (Dover, DE). Important to note, is that Mr. Richardson enjoyed every bit of his military career. You could always find him in his army uniform or Army fatigues that he proudly wore on all veteran holidays standing ready for a “photo” shoot. Mr. Richardson’s employment history had been with Chrysler, Eastern Trucking Company, George & Lynch Trucking Company, Dover Air Force Base; a handyman as a plumber, home remodeling and electrical work. In his later years, he became obsessed in search of hidden treasures in such places as dumpsters, abandoned houses or local trash cans. He would put his heart into making these treasures anew to take them to either Spencer’s Bizarre or over to the sale in Crumpton, Maryland. He loved cooking and was a master at making rice pudding. Mr. Richardson enjoyed life regardless of its obstacles. He was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, Smyrna; serving as a Trustee, member of the Male Choir and Culinary Committee. Along with his parents, William was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine; his daughter, Carol Ann Fletcher; his son-in-law, Naaman “Chuck” Summers, Jr. and granddaughter, Heather. Also preceding him in death are his brothers, Herbert, Charlie, John Henry, and Leo Richardson; his sisters, Elizabeth Williams, Flossie Little, and Hester Ann Scott. To appreciate his life are his children: Daughters, Ethella Clark of Dover, Barbara Summers of Clayton and Tracey Richardson of Smyrna; sons, Donald (Sandra) of Smyrna; Stanley “Peter” (Lisa) of Dover; Kevin “Tony” of Smyrna and Barry (Sharon) of North Carolina.
