Shirley E O'Hara Obituary

Shirley E. O’Hara, beloved mother, grandmother and great Grandmother (GG), passed away peacefully on April 11, 2021 at the age of 93. Shirley lived an extraordinary life. She was born in Kingston, NY to Mary and Philip Tucker. After her mother’s early death, she went to live with her beloved Aunt Marge in NYC. She graduated from the State University of New York at New Paltz with a degree in Early Childhood Education. While at New Paltz, she was a member of the New York chapter of the Newman Club, where she met her beloved husband and the love of her life, John F. O’Hara, Sr. They were happily married for 62 years. Together they raised their 6 children in Brooklyn, NY. The most important things to Shirley were her devout faith, family and education. Shirley was a Dame of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. She was also a member of CAP, the Christian Awareness Program at St. Ephrem’s. She was a teacher with the NYC Board of Education. She held three Master’s Degrees in Education and several specialized licenses. After retiring in 1993, she was asked to come back as a Consultant, which she did until 1999. Shirley is survived by five of her children, Michael J. (Ann Marie), Peter J. (Madorie), Patricia E. Rok (Walter), Mary Anne, James T. (Jane) and her daughter-in-law Paula O’Hara (Joel). She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 3 great grandsons, her beloved brother Bill Tucker and his wife Dolores and many nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly. She was predeceased by her beloved husband John, her loving son John, Jr., her Aunt Marge, sister Elaine Galgano, and brothers Edward and Donald Tucker. Shirley was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren. She is deeply loved and will be dearly missed. The Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at St. Ephrem Church on Friday April 16, 2021 at 11:30 AM. The Mass will be live-streamed at www.stephremparish- brooklyn.org. She will be buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY. All arrangements are through McLaughlin & Sons Funeral Home, Brooklyn, NY, www.mclaughlinandsons.com. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested in Shirley’s memory to Franciscan Bread for the Poor, The St. Francis Breadline, 144 West 32 nd Street New York, NY 10001-3202.
