Amy Baule

Amy Ovida (Olson) Baule, age 95, of Andover, SD died Thursday, April 8, 2021 at Sandford Hospital Webster, SD. Her memorial interment will be at the Andover Cemetery. The first of ten children, Amy Ovida Olson was born on the family farm at Langford, SD August 30, 1925 to Thomas and Alma (Stave) Olson. Because she was a very tiny baby, she was kept warm by placing her in a box near the wood burning stove. Amy was baptized at Langford Evangelical Lutheran Church and confirmed at Fulnes Lutheran Church. When she began rural elementary school at Homer District 130 she only knew the Norwegian language. She graduated from Pierpont High School in 1943. That summer she attended Northern State Teacher’s College. Upon completion of the Certification of Teachers Exam she taught 2 years at a rural school south of Webster, SD. She continued to attend college during summer sessions. She also taught at a rural school east of Pierpont and another east of Butler. This was followed by teaching 2nd grade at Bristol, SD. On June 15th, 1948, Amy married Clarence Baule at Langford Evangelical Lutheran Church. They owned and operated a farm north of Andover, SD. They raised five children, striving to instill in them music, faith, integrity, and sportsmanship. In 1964, Amy earned her State Teaching Certification from Northern State Teacher’s College. In 1972 she earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from Northern State College. She taught Elementary Education at Pierpont, SD from 1964-1975. In 1988 Amy and Clarence moved from the family farm to Andover. Clarence continued to farm and Amy continued to teach Elementary Education and Special Education at Langford, SD from 1976 until she retired in 1990. Amy was active in home, church, and community. She served in the church as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, and president and secretary of the Ladies Aide. She was a member of the South Dakota Education Association and served as secretary for the local chapter of SDEA. Throughout her life she loved teaching and working with children. With her husband she attended music and sports activities in which her children, and grandchildren participated. Her own special interests included sewing (dresses for bridesmaids, costumes for school programs, shirts/dresses for her children, draperies, etc.), creating and embroidering altar paraments and baptismal gowns. She enjoyed refinishing wood furniture and contributed to remodeling efforts in her home. In her retirement years she enjoyed her flower garden and taking daily walks around Andover. Blessed to have shared her life are Gloria (David) Ochsner (Brandon), Claire (Linda) Baule (Minnetonka, MN), Sandra Payne (Aberdeen), David Baule (Thailand), and Gary (Patricia) Baule (Andover); five grandchildren – Christopher (Deborah) Ochsner, Cameron (Amy) Ochsner, Jason (Anna) Baule, Michael Baule, and Megan Baule; six great grandchildren – Lilliana Ochsner, James Baule, Alex Baule, Camila Baule Toledo, Jasmine Baule Toledo and Hazel Baule Toledo; and four sisters – Evelyn Olson, Thelma Dutenhoeffer, Elsie Reinhart and Opal Jordan.
