Judith Gosnell Tisdale Obituary

Tisdale, Judith G. (nee Lorenz), June 5, 1940 - April 6, 2021 Judy passed away peacefully at home on the morning of April 6, 2021, after several days in hospice, surrounded by her loved ones. In dying, she has left behind her beloved daughters Miriam Murphy and Jennifer Gosnell, as well as her precious granddaughter Maggie Gosnell. She is preceded in death by brother Eric Lorenz and sister Ann Lorenz Van Zanten. She is survived by brother Kurt Lorenz, cousins Susan, Lynn, and John, nieces Carroll, Clara, and Em, and nephew Colby. Judy was born in 1940 in St. Louis. She attended Community School, John Burroughs School, Wellesley College (B.A.), and Webster University (M.A.). She married in 1963 and she and her husband bought a house in Kirkwood, where they raised their daughters and where she lived until her death. Judy spent her entire working career as an elementary school teacher, first teaching in the city schools, then moving to Community School. There she taught 4th grade, then Art and finally, Science, where she loved showing children how to observe, record, and analyze the natural world. She was a firm believer that an excellent education at a young age would allow anyone to succeed later in life. She brought this philosophy to more than a thousand children, including those in the Wellston schools where she volunteered after retirement. She was a long time member of Eliot Unitarian Chapel, where she served on many committees, including as Chair of the Board. Her passion project there was coordinating the cooks for the Room at the Inn program, which relies on a network of local churches to provide nightly shelters for homeless families. She had a gift for chatting with the parents and children around the table on those evenings, making them feel like honored guests. She was also an early supporter for the church to be a welcoming congregation. Judy had a rare talent for making and keeping friends, and will be missed by many. She shared her love of books, puzzles, travel, needlework, gardening, nature and bird watching with family, friends, and students alike. No services are planned. The family will celebrate her life with a large picnic gathering on June 5th, which would have been her 81st birthday. Details will follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation either to Community School at https://www.communityschool.com/support/donate, or Eliot Chapel at http://www.eliotchapel.org/giving.
