Kathleen Melanie (Littlefield) Sproul 1951-2021 1969 2018 AUGUSTA – Kathleen Melanie (Littlefield) Sproul died on April 9, 2021 at her home in Augusta at the age of 69 years old. She died after a 10 year battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a rare neurological disease of which there is no cure and little is known. Born on June 24, 1951, Kathy was the second child born to Dexter Parker Littlefield and Patricia M. (O’Grady) Littlefield in Worcester, Massachusetts. They moved to Belfast, Maine when Kathy was still quite young. She attended Belfast public schools, graduating from Belfast Area High School in 1969. In high school, Kathy sang in Chorus, participated in school plays and American Field Service. She later attended Beal Business College in Bangor, Maine. Kathy had two brief marriages in the 1970’s to Richard Otis and Milon Fuller, Jr. These marriages, although each ending in divorce, blessed her with two children – Jason Jeremy Otis Fuller and Melanie Amber Fuller. On November 14, 1981, Kathy married her husband of nearly 40 years, Donald F. Sproul. In 1983, they had their youngest child, Bethany Ann Sproul. Kathy was a loving mother to the three children and Kathy’s home was always welcoming to all the children’s friends. Matthew Dix, Shelby Thibodeau, and Lindsay Frye were treated as members of the family. Kathy and Don attended all their children’s youth and school athletic events, school programs, dance recitals, and scouting events. Kathy was a regular volunteer as the “Team Mom” for many of the children’s athletic teams. Kathy spent her professional career in the medical field as a biller and office manager. She was a medical biller at MaineGeneral Medical Center and Augusta Family Physicians. She later advanced to become Office Manager at Augusta Family Physicians. She went into medical billing consulting for a period of time and finished her career at Central Maine Orthotics and Prosthetics. She was forced to stop working by the effects of the yet to be diagnosed Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. She was then able to devote herself to her true calling – that of a loving grandmother. She was quick to tell anyone who would listen how beautiful and talented her 8 grandchildren are! Kathy most loved traveling and supporting her husband, children and grandchildren to numerous sports venues to watch them play. She was an active member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church for 35 years where she sang in the church choir and helped organize and host many church dinners and fellowship events. Her homemade meatballs were always in demand! For the past 5 years she has been a member of Water of Life Lutheran Church in Newcastle. Kathy had a solid belief in God and knew that Jesus sacrificed so she can, and will, have eternal life. Kathy was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Kathy’s final act on earth was the donation of her brain tissue to the Cure PSP Brain Bank at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. Her greatest desire was that her donation will help find the cause and eventual cure of this terminal neurological disease, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Kathy was pre-deceased by her parents, older brother Timothy P. Littlefield and beloved sister in law Gayle. She is survived by her husband of nearly 40 years, Donald F. Sproul: her son Jason Fuller and his wife Crystal of Manchester; her daughter Melanie Lajoie and her husband Greg of Augusta, and her daughter Bethany Sproul LeBrun and her husband, Todd of Augusta. She leaves behind 8 precious grandchildren: Luke and Josh Lajoie, Maya and Nolan LeBrun, Grady Fuller, and Natalie, Grant and Holden Curtis. She is survived by a brother, Sumner Scribner and his wife Rhonda of Belfast, and a sister Kimberly Clark of Orrington; a brother in law, the Rev. Edward Sproul and wife Bess of Spencer, MA; sister in law Cynthia Sproul of Augusta; brother in law Roger Sproul of Augusta; and sister in law Linda Small of Farmingdale. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. Holding a special place in her heart were nieces Dynnise, Laura and Caytie; grandnieces Madeline, Meredith, and Merin; and grandnephews Gabriel and Neil. The family would especially like to thank the staff of MaineGeneral Hospice Care for their assistance during her last months and weeks. A special place in our hearts will always be held for Nurse Susan and Nurse Kerry. Visiting hours will be at Knowlton-Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church Street, Augusta from 4-7 pm on Friday, April 23. A service of celebration of Kathy’s life will be held at Water of Life Lutheran Church, 618 US Route 1, Newcastle at 1 pm on Saturday, April 24. CDC guidelines will be observed at both events.
