Johnny Curry Obituary

Johnny Curry, 70, of Knoxville, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, April 9, 2021 after a courageous fight with cancer. 

Johnny, a native of Burlington, North Carolina, graduated from Williams High School. While at Williams, he was one of the leading scorers on the basketball team as well as a member of several school clubs. Johnny continued his basketball career at Saint Paul College in Lawrenceville, Virginia; where he met his beautiful wife, Anita. He graduated from Saint Paul in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science degree. After college, Johnny began his 32-year career at Tennessee Valley Authority as an Internal Auditor and was soon promoted to Manager in the TVA Office of Personnel and Budget. He later became a Manager in TVA Public Safety and a Facilitator of the TVA Star 7 Program. He finished his TVA career as Retirement Counselor for the TVA Retirement System. 

Upon retirement, Johnny enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family and friends. He was a proud and dedicated member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and was approaching his 50th year with the organization. He was also a faithful member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church where he served on the Hospitality Committee and Budget Committee. Family was especially important to Johnny!  He was a devoted husband and father. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, daughter, son and six grandchildren. He also loved watching sports and listening to music. 

Johnny was preceded in death by his son, Marc A. Curry; parents, James F. and Annie L. (Harvey) Curry, Sr. and brothers, Frankie Curry and Roy Curry. 

He is survived by his wife, Anita Curry; daughter and son-in-Law, Alicia (Curry) and Brian Kelley; grandchildren, Trinity A. Curry, Myah A. Curry, Aven M. and Bryle A. Kelley, Halle E. and Marc Joseph Curry; brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Sheryl Curry; brother, Charlie Curry; sister and brother-in-law, Annie (Curry) and Moses Smith; sister, Emma Curry; sister, Mary (Curry) Moss; sister, Vanessa Curry; sister, Freida Curry and a host of nieces and nephews.

Monday, April 19, 2021, a public walkthrough from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 1807 Dandridge Avenue, Knoxville, TN.  Social distancing and face coverings are required.  A graveside service will follow at Highland Memorial West, 9913 Sherril Boulevard, Knoxville, TN, where a white dove release will conclude the service.  During this time, we will remain in compliance with the Governor’s Executive Order No. 17 (COVID-19). Flowers may be delivered to the church the morning of the walkthrough.
