Leo G. Hutchings Obituary

HUTCHINGS, Leo G., beloved husband for more than 66 years of the late Elaine (Matthews) Hutchings, died peacefully on April 7, 2021 at 96 years of age. The son of Lilian (Parker) and Harold Hutchings, Mr. Hutchings was born in Ynyshir, a small town in the Rhondda Valley of Wales, UK. Eventually he and his family made their home in Barnstaple, England where he grew up and received his education. During WWII, Mr. Hutchings performed his military service in the King’s Royal Rifle Brigade, a branch of the British Army, serving in the North African Campaign and Italy where he was severely wounded. In 1947, Mr. Hutchings and his family came to the US, settling briefly in Pawtucket, RI before moving to Warwick where he has been a resident for nearly 66 years. Known in the business world and private life as a man of honor, integrity, kindness, wisdom and love, Mr. Hutchings became employed at the Cranston Print Works Corporation in 1951 as an accountant in the General office. Throughout his 35 years with the company, he served in various positions including those of Treasurer and Vice President of Finance and Administration. He was appointed to the Board of Directors in 1976 and eventually became Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Hutchings firmly believed that unto whom much is given, much is required and he tempered his life accordingly. He has been a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Warwick for 65 years and throughout those years served faithfully at many levels of Parish life. His service included work in the Sunday School, numerous years on the Vestry, several terms as Senior Warden, Chairman of the Financial Committee and Acolyte Director. He was a many time delegate to the Diocesan Convention. His volunteer work also included his appointment in 1992 by then Governor Sundlun to the initial board of the RI Airport Corporation during the expansion and development of the Warwick Airport. He played a major role in helping the Board articulate its principal goals, and proudly donned his hard hat for the “signing of the beam” at the Topping Out Ceremony which preceded the ribbon cutting at the opening of the new terminal in November, 1996. At the end of his initial term, Mr. Hutchings was reappointed to the Board by Governor Lincoln Almond and served in various capacities until his resignation several years later. He served the Saint Elizabeth Community for over 25 years and was a long-time member and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, leading a successful Capital Campaign and dedicating himself to ensuring the growth and development that led the community from the original Providence based St. Elizabeth Nursing Home to become the community it is today. Mr. Hutchings’ family was his greatest source of pride and joy. He is survived by his loving children, Elaine Hodgson and her husband Robert of Reading, MA; Gail Cohen and her husband Robert of East Greenwich; five adoring grandchildren: Pamela (Douglas) Williams, Jill (Gregory) Stoodley, Sarah (Michael) Rosendale, Rebecca (Jeffrey) Bellistri and Elizabeth (Ryan) DeSisto, as well as 11 cherished great-grandchildren (Chris, Nick, Leah, Allie, Sam, Domenic, Sophie, Avery, Noah, Leo and Luca), all of whom came to know him for his gentle compassion, strength and humor. He is also survived by his brother, Billy Hutchings of Chicago and many nieces and nephews. A private service for Mr. Hutchings will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Warwick, RI. Should friends desire, donations in Mr. Hutchings’ name may be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 111 West Shore Rd., Warwick, RI 02889 or St. Elizabeth Community, 2364 Post Rd., Suite 100, Warwick, RI 02886.
