Victor Adolfo Colotla Obituary

We are heartbroken that our beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather passed away suddenly due to a brain aneurysm. Victor is survived by his loving wife Vivienne Xochitl, son Ian (Malene), daughter Eileen (Andreas), mother-in-law Alicia, grand-children Julian, Mateo, Sofia, Victor Oliver, Anna Sophie and Maximilian. He is also survived by siblings Manuel, Elisa, Lucina, Catalina, Juan, Carlos, Lupe and Josefina, and a large extended family in Mexico, Denmark and the US.

Victor was a kind and gentle person with an unassuming demeanor and remarkable intellect. He was an accomplished psychologist, dedicated researcher, aspiring polyglot, tai-chi enthusiast and constant jokester. He loved his family with all his heart and was loved by all of them and everyone he met.

He was born in Mexico City as the second-oldest of a family of nine siblings—and was a caring, paternal figure to many of them and their families throughout his life. He completed his undergraduate studies at the National University of Mexico (UNAM) where he met his lifelong partner and soulmate Vivienne Xochitl. They subsequently emigrated to Canada to pursue graduate studies. Victor obtained a Master of Arts degree and a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Toronto and York University. Due to family reasons, and now with two children, they returned to Mexico in 1975.

Victor was an exemplary husband with extremely progressive views for 1970s Mexico. While directing a Master’s program in Behavioural Pharmacology and leading the Faculty of Graduate Studies in Psychology at the UNAM, he was an equal contributor at home and in raising his young children.

The family returned to Canada in 1990 and settled in West Vancouver, where he led a fulfilling professional life as a college and university professor, clinical psychologist, researcher, and private practitioner. During his career, Victor’s practice focused on clinical psychology and neuropsychology. He contributed with significant research on mental health and trauma recovery and the areas of addictions and post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as the history of psychology in Mexico, Canada and British Columbia.

Victor was very proud of his children’s academic and professional endeavours that took them across the world. He was thrilled to become a grandfather and spent hours carrying babies, playing with toddlers, and hosting sleepovers and pancake breakfasts for his grandchildren. He and Vivienne traveled to California, Denmark and Hong Kong for months at a time to be present in their grandchildren’s lives.

The family wishes to thank the exemplary staff at Lions Gate Hospital: the social workers, neurosurgeons and ICU nurses and doctors who looked after our beloved Victor in his final hours.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes to direct donations to the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation ICU fund in memory of Victor: https://lghfoundation.com/tribute-donation
