Phebe T. Burke, 88, of Rockport, Mass died peacefully on Sunday, March 21st at her home surrounded by her loving children. She was the wife of the late John Logan Burke of Dayton, Ohio. She was born on October 23, 1932 to the late James MacNaughton Thompson of Albany, NY and Ann Gibbons Elliott of Wilmington, DE. She grew up in New York City and attended The Nightingale Bamford School and went on to Miss Porters School in Farmington, CT and Bennett Jr College. After college she attended Parsons School of Design and later worked with the designing firm of Smyth, Urquhart and Marckwald, the only firm at the time run by women to decorate the interiors of renowned naval ships. She later received her Bachelor of Social Work from Hunter College and became a caseworker in Brooklyn. Phebe married John Logan Burke and they moved to Brooklyn Heights where they raised their four children. Logan worked for W.E.Hutton for many years and later at the Investment Banking Firm of Hambrecht & Quist located in San Francisco. Phebe taught in the city schools and enjoyed many successful years there. She also loved her volunteer position at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, CA. They eventually moved back East and found their new home in Rockport, MA. Phebe was a wizard with her New York Times Sunday Crossword Puzzle and relished finishing it. She loved Broadway shows, especially musicals and knew the scores to most of them. She was also an advocate for City Museums whether New York, San Francisco or Boston. She adored her children and grandchildren and their various dogs. Phebe was predeceased by her son George MacNaughton Burke and is survived by her sisters: Emily Walker of Cheshire, CT and Susan Buck of Beverly Farms, MA. Their children John Logan (Jeb) Burke, III and his wife Adriana Burke and their children Lucas and Mateo of Glen Ridge, NJ. Anne Roberts of Kennebunkport, ME and Meredith Manos and her partner Kenneth Murray of Ipswich, MA and her son Nicholas James (Nick) Manos. Phebe had many nieces and nephews whom she also adored. There will be no service at this time. The family is planning a Celebration of Life at a later date. They would also like to thank Care Dimensions for their support.
