Daniel Lane

Lake Junaluska, Daniel "Dan" Lane, Jr., age 83, passed away on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at his residence. He was a native of Sampson County, North Carolina and the son of the late Daniel and Juanita Dixon Lane. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Lane, who died in 2009 and a sister, Virginia Simmons. He received a BA from Duke University and a Masters from the University of Chicago and was a former college Professor of History. Dan was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesville where he sang in the choir. He was active in NAMI, was a foster grandparent and participated in the senior games. He is survived by two daughters, Angie Lane of Asheville and Carol Lane of Cary; a son, Danny Lane (Amy) of Hendersonville; two sisters Bernice Bickell of Durham and Juanita (Neno) Allison of Clermont, Florida; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville with the Reverend Sandy Giles officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Waynesville, P.O.
