Patricia Ann Poythress Obituary

Patricia Ann Poythress was born in Birmingham, Alabama on August 29, 1952. She was the daughter of late Dock and Rowena Poythress. She was the sixth of eleven children. At the age of 4, she lost her hearing to meningitis and that’s when her life changed. In the fall of 1956, her life began at Alabama State School for the Blind and Deaf, where she completed all of her childhood education. During high school, she participated in track at multiple events. In 1973, she was invited to become a member of the US Deaf Track Team, and she was the first Deaf girl from Alabama to be invited to the World Games for the Deaf, which was held in Malmo, Sweden, July 21-28, 1973. She later attended Lawson State Junior College from 1974 to 1975 for nursing. Patricia was blessed with a daughter, Courtyin Walters and son, James Walters. In the last ten years of her life, Patricia traveled from as far north as Boston, Massachusetts, sightseeing at MIT, to as far west as Houston, Texas, sunbathing while watching family members playing in the pool. She has been to several sporting events and graduations for different family members. Patricia earned her food handler license, CPR Certification, and had recently become a registered voter in the state of Alabama. She enjoyed playing spades and dominos, drawing, putting together puzzles, telling jokes, and pulling pranks. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dock Jr. and Rowena Poythress; her son, James Walters; her brothers, Larry, Dock III, Joe, and James; and godmother, Countess Juanita Poole-Moore. She leaves behind to cherish her legacy: her daughter, Courtyin Walters; nine grandchildren; six siblings, Annie, Dorothy (David), Nathaniel (Maxine), Jerry, Allen (LaQuetta), and David (Lauren); thirty-two nieces and nephews; a host of other relatives and friends; and some very special sisters, Nina Poythress, Laura Poole Johnston, Saundra Hunter, Joyce Drayton, Sonya Herntez, Sharon Brewer, and Minister Pat Lowe.
