Joseph Overton was born in Aurora, NC to Lida Archbell and Jay Overton on July 28, 1939. He passed away peacefully on April 6, 2021, in Pittsburgh, PA with his family by his side. He was the most kind and loving husband and father who enjoyed life. He especially loved traveling throughout Europe with his wife and had a special place in his heart for French culture and European history. He was an avid learner and loved sharing his knowledge of history and so many other interests and will be remembered for his bright outlook on life. Joe graduated from Aurora NC, High School and the University of Arizona in Tucson with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He was a Veteran of the United States Air Force with training as a Ground to Ground and Ground to Air Radio Tech. He was assigned to an AC&W Squadron at England AFB in Louisiana for more than a year. Then cross-trained into Airborne Radar, Computer, and Bombing equipment on B-47 Aircraft. He provided technical support as a Tech with flying status on B-47 bomber aircraft. He flew missions out of Tucson and Lincoln, Nebraska. He was a proud Eagle Scout with two psalms, Silver Award, and many other Scout accomplishments. He worked as an adult Scout Leader and then as a Committee Chairman. After College, his first assignment was working for Westinghouse Electric Corp on an engineering development program that included testing wire-guided torpedoes out of a Naval test facility in Keyport, WA. He then worked as a Senior and a Principal Engineer and Supervisor on many prototypes of Electronic Warfare Countermeasure systems for the USAF and the Navy.  He ended his career working as a Supervisor and Logistics Manager on a development program for a commercial Ground Station Satellite Communication program that is installed in Washington DC, Ottawa, and Mexico City. Joe worked for 26 years at Westinghouse Electric Corporation in the Defense and Electronics Division in Baltimore, MD. While at Westinghouse, his wife and two children were with him as he worked at field locations near Bremerton, WA; Fort Walton Beach, FL, Ft Worth, TX and Warner Robins, GA with a primary base in Baltimore, MD. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, JoAnn Tidmore Overton. Loving father of Jennifer Overton Cornejo (Jose) of New Rochelle, NY and Bryan Overton of Pittsburgh, PA, Mother Lida Overton, Sisters Ellen Weiss (Ronald), and Estelle Jones (Thomas) all from Newport News, VA. Grandchildren Elliot Joseph, Adam David, and Oliver Louie. Joe courageously survived Colon cancer more than 23 years ago and non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma large B-cell with chemotherapy and a Stem Cell Transplant procedure in 2011. During retirement, his curiosity and love for learning continued. He enjoyed repairing and building personal computers, as well as, restoring automobiles. He was also a licensed General Building Contractor and built a new house for his family in Eldersburg, MD in 1993, and while in Guntersville, AL he built and restored eight (8) houses. He always made time to work on home projects with his son and son-in-law, teaching them all about electrical work and home construction. Joe also selected some grapevines and grew a small crop to develop his own wine. He loved watching sports, especially College Basketball and his Alma Mater. He was a lifelong Episcopalian and member of the Church of the Epiphany in Guntersville, AL until moving to Pittsburgh, PA in 2020. He is leaving many wonderful friends he has come to know and enjoyed their company in his life.
