It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Paul Andrew Rhodenizer of Second Peninsula on Monday, April 5, at the age of 89 years. Paul was born on Mosher’s Island on November 2, 1931, to the late Gladys Evangeline (Stevens) Harnish and Clarence Laurier Rhodenizer. He was the last remaining member of his immediate family. Younger years were spent living on Second Peninsula where he had many fond memories of neighbours and community happenings. Paul attended the one room schoolhouse and often recalled teacher Olivet Zinck’s strictness and strappings. During the war, Clarey moved the family to Halifax to work at the Dockyard. From 1941 to 1947 Paul fondly remembered with great detail the wartime housing where they lived, talking of the secret comings and goings of the men and women who served in the war. He had vivid memories of schools he attended (two he loved and one he viewed as a concentration camp) along with a paper delivery route and various other jobs and people he met. In 1947 Paul’s dad Clarence moved the family back to the end of Second Peninsula to his dream farm where Clarence kept cows, grew cabbage, raised 2 seagulls from hatch and fished halibut with his son Douglas. The younger son Paul completed grade 10 at the Second Peninsula School then graduated grade 11 at the Lunenburg Academy, travelling into town with the working boys paying $5 a week toward gas. This community became his home as he grew up among the Steven’s boys who were always committing some kind of fun mischief. Hanging out at Kerr’s Restaurant eventually allowed him to meet his future wife Althea Joudrey whom he married in 1956. Several years later they started a family and eventually taught their children and then grandchildren the ways of the farm. Having a true entrepreneurial spirit, Paul and neighbour Randy Stevens trucked milk to the Lunenburg Dairy, picking up milk from all the small farms up the Peninsula. They also collaborated to grow and sell cabbage. In 1967 Paul built a new barn and he and Althea worked hard to pay the bills by increasing the number of cows and quota, selling cabbage and fishing for scallops and lobster. Each grandchild had a lobster trap assigned to them and collected lobster money at the end of the season. In the early 1970’s Hovie Slauenwhite taught them how to make his sauerkraut recipe and Krispi Kraut Sauerkraut was born in Spencer Steven’s barn. This barn was quickly outgrown and in 1975, the current Krispi Kraut Sauerkraut Plant in Martin’s Brook was built and nephew Kevin Rhodenizer became the manager. Paul and Althea also spent many, many hours working to help a small church in Lunenburg. Eventually, Jim and Evelyn Hicks came to help out and God grew this Church to the vibrant community of believers that meet at Faith Baptist Chapel in Centre today. Paul’s love of Bible prophecy and teaching youth continued until he was close to 80 when he had his first knee replacement. Arthritis wasn’t his friend and his later years were filled with discomfort except for his elbows, they were the only part of his body that he declared didn’t hurt. Even though he had great physical difficulty, his mind was always on the farm and he loved to try to recall old memorized phone numbers and funny stories. Even with his trouble getting around, he still helped as he could by driving the tractor for cabbage harvest. Paul is predeceased by his parents, brother Douglas Rhodenizer, half-brother Neil Harnish and half-sister Evelyn Stevens. He is survived by wife Althea, son Glenn (Karen) Rhodenizer and their children, Justin, Jessica, Luke, Michaela, Lorian and Shaelyn, all of Second Peninsula; daughter Tania (Kevin) Fogarty and their children, Benjamin (Helaine) Fogarty, Mississauga, Ivy (Tanner) Hofs, Halifax, Olive (Zach) Laustsen, Montreal and Josiah (Vanna) Fogarty, Ottawa and great-grandchildren, Levi, Hannah, Sage and Adora plus many nieces and nephews. A private committal service will be held for immediate family at the Second Peninsula Cemetery at 10 am Friday, April 9, followed by a public memorial service at 11 am at Faith Baptist Chapel, Centre, Pastor Steven Hiltz officiating. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, seating is limited and attendance is by invitation only. The service will be livestreamed via Facebook on the faithbaptistchapellunenburg site. Flowers are welcome.
